Saint Mary’s College of California, located in Moraga, California, is a Catholic, Lasallian institution founded in 1863 by Archbishop Joseph Alemany and operated by the De La Salle Christian Brothers since 1868.[1] Its athletic teams, the Gaels, compete in the West Coast Conference. The nickname dates to 1929, when sportswriter Pat Frayne of the San Francisco Call christened the football team “The Galloping Gaels.”[2]
Design and History
The current Saint Mary’s Gaels athletic logo system was unveiled on July 21, 2007, during the college’s reunion weekend.[2] It was developed by Osaki Creative, Inc. of Emeryville, California, with Kurt Osaki serving as lead designer.[3] The system retained the “SMC” monogram but completely revamped it, incorporating Celtic knotwork, a shield, and a custom Celtic-inspired font.[2]
The redesign process began in June 2006 after an earlier attempt in 2003 was abandoned. The athletics department sent requests for proposals to eleven design firms before selecting Osaki Creative, which had previously designed identity systems for the University of Hawaii and San Diego State University.[2] A 20-person logo design committee, representing alumni, students, faculty, coaches, and other campus constituents, guided the project. Osaki Creative conducted over 100 interviews with members of the SMC community and presented roughly 25 initial design concepts before the final system was approved.[2]
Prior to the 2007 redesign, the college used several outdated marks. The Gael had been depicted as a knight on a horse in two earlier renderings, one cartoonish and one more aristocratic, and a blocky SMC monogram had been introduced in 2001. That monogram was originally created in 1992 by a former football coach for a helmet decal.[2][4] None of these marks, according to the athletics department, accurately portrayed the Gaelic heritage.[2]
In 2023, Saint Mary’s College introduced updated brand identity guidelines. The college paired the SMC logo with the name “Saint Mary’s College of California” in a new lockup, and the athletics spirit mark was designated as the primary athletics logo.[5][6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2007 logo system was designed around four keywords identified through research: family, unity, brotherhood, and pride. According to lead designer Kurt Osaki, the Celtic knotwork creates a monogram that reflects unity and the family of Saint Mary’s College, while the shield is a symbol of Gaelic pride and protection.[2] The athletics department further explained that the overlapping letterforms symbolize unity of school and team, the shield represents strength, pride, and the Celtic warrior, and the “G” stands for Gaels.[7]
The college’s official colors are Lasallian Navy (HEX #143257) and SMC Red (HEX #D82732), with SMC Red serving as the primary accent color.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2007 logo system included a custom Celtic font designed specifically as part of the identity, along with a knotwork pattern that could be used as a trim.[2][4] The current athletics logotype draws inspiration from classic typography and Gaelic letterforms and is often paired with “Saint Mary’s College” and “Gaels” in Gaelic font.[6] The college’s 2023 brand guidelines updated institutional typography to include the fonts Arpona, Avenir, and Bagatela.[5]
