Cove Rangers Football Club, based in Cove Bay on the southern edge of Aberdeen, Scotland, was formed in 1922 and has competed in the Scottish Professional Football League since 2019.[1] The club’s visual identity has evolved from simple shirt crests to a more elaborate badge featuring a griffin rampant encircled by olive branches.[2]
Design and History
Documented crest history for Cove Rangers is limited. According to a historical kit reference, in the early 1980s a crest appeared on the team’s shirts bearing a striking resemblance to the classic Chelsea FC badge. This was soon replaced by a more elegant version that was still in use in 2019.[1]
By the late 2010s, the badge in use featured a griffin rampant encircled by olive branches, a design that one designer described as unconvincing when proposing an alternative concept in 2019.[2] That proposed redesign was a personal concept by the designer, not an official club rebrand, and it did not replace the club’s actual crest.
The club’s official website does not currently publish a detailed history of its crest or its design origins. The current badge remains in use on club communications and kit, with the club confirming continuity of its home and away strip designs for the 2025/26 season.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented symbolism for the Cove Rangers crest is scarce. [2] The club’s nickname, the Toonsers, derives from a local dialect word describing someone who makes a living from land-based trade or manufacturing rather than through the Aberdeen trawler fleet.[1]
