The Santa Cruz Warriors are the NBA G League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, based in Santa Cruz, California. The team’s primary logo, introduced in 2012, was designed to visually connect the franchise to its NBA parent club while establishing a distinct coastal identity.
Design and History
The Santa Cruz Warriors identity was unveiled at a press conference on June 12, 2012, when the franchise relocated from North Dakota, where it had competed as the Dakota Wizards. Golden State Warriors assistant general manager Kirk Lacob revealed the new logo, which features a large blue “W” with trident-looking endpoints placed over a yellow circle. The team name “SANTA CRUZ WARRIORS” appears in capital block letters bending around the lower half of the circle.[1]
The logo borrows the core structural elements of the Golden State Warriors mark, including the blue and gold color scheme, the circular badge format, and the same lettering style used for the parent club’s team name. The key difference is the replacement of the Golden Gate Bridge element with a yellow trident-shaped “W.”[2]
The franchise’s ownership history explains the visual continuity. On June 27, 2011, Golden State Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber purchased the Dakota Wizards of the NBA Development League, making Golden State the fourth NBA franchise to own and operate its own minor league affiliate.[3] The team played its first game in Santa Cruz on December 23, 2012.[3]
In June 2026, the organization unveiled a commemorative 15th anniversary logo for the 2026-27 season, paying homage to the team’s 2015 NBA G League Championship and its four NBA G League Franchise of the Year recognitions.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The trident-shaped “W” was not officially explained by the team at the time of the logo’s unveiling. Peter Andrade, Kaiser Permanente’s senior vice president, offered an informal interpretation at the press conference, noting that the points on the “W” resembled Poseidon’s trident, which he thought fitting given the team’s coastal location.[1] This observation was echoed in contemporaneous coverage describing the mark as a “large, blue ‘W’ with trident-looking endpoints.”[4]
The blue and gold palette directly mirrors the Golden State Warriors’ identity, reinforcing the one-to-one affiliate relationship between the two organizations.[2]
Typography and Design
The wordmark beneath the circular badge uses the same lettering style as the Golden State Warriors’ team name, according to contemporary logo analysis.[2] The team name is set in capital block letters that curve around the lower half of the yellow circle.[1]
In 2017, the team updated its uniforms and court design to further emphasize the connection to Golden State. The new Nike uniforms matched Golden State’s player and name fonts and included a Golden State Warriors logo on the shorts. The court at Kaiser Permanente Arena added Golden State Warriors logos inside both free throw circles, and sideline and baseline colors shifted from royal blue to Warriors gold.[5]
