Servette FC, officially Servette Football Club 1890, is a Swiss football club based in Geneva, nicknamed “les Grenats” in reference to its emblematic maroon color. The club’s visual identity has evolved over the decades while retaining a stylized “S” as a strong symbol of its identity.[1]
Design and History
The club was founded on 20 March 1890 under the name “Football Club de la Servette.”[2] The original club color was not maroon; Servette only began playing in grenat between 1907 and 1908, when the dark red color became the club’s official color.[3]
The current crest, introduced in 2003, is accompanied by a star above the shield that symbolizes ten Swiss national championship titles. The star did not appear on Servette kits before 2003, when it was introduced together with the current crest.[4] The crest continues to appear on the left chest of the club’s home kits with the gold star above it.[5]
Servette has periodically revived older logo versions on special occasions. For the club’s 130th anniversary in 2020, the old logo was recreated by club graphic designer Cédric Gobet for a limited-edition anniversary shirt.[2] For the 135th anniversary in 2025, the club released a special shirt featuring an old club fanion, symbolizing the heritage and pride of the institution.[6]
For the 2024-2025 season, the club brought back the “old logo” on both home and away shirts, with designs inspired by the 2000-2001 season.[7] The retro “SFC” logo returned again for the 2026-2027 home shirt, placed centrally on the jersey to affirm the club’s identity and create a link between its history and future.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s logo has evolved over the decades but has consistently retained a stylized “S” letter, a symbol of strong identity for the club.[1] The grenat and gold colors are described by the club as symbols of pride and determination, embodying the contrasts of Geneva.[9]
The star above the crest, introduced in 2003, symbolizes ten Swiss championship titles.[4] Geneva’s civic symbols also appear in club-related designs: the 135th anniversary shirt featured a tonal pattern of eagles and keys, symbolizing Geneva’s heritage.[10]
