FC Irtysh Omsk (Russian: Иртыш Омск) is a Russian football club based in Omsk, founded in 1946. The club’s visual identity centers on a seagull emblem, a symbol that has been part of the team’s badge and is also reflected in the fan nickname “seagulls” (чайки).[1]
Design and History
In December 2019, club president Sergey Novikov announced that the club’s logo would be changed ahead of the team’s promotion to the Russian Football National League (FNL). Novikov stated that the club would not “go to extremes” and would preserve the existing style, but that the logo would be “somewhat modified.”[2][3]
Local reporting at the time confirmed that the club’s symbol, the seagull, would be retained, but that its depiction was planned to be reworked to appear more aggressive, following the example of the local hockey club Avangard. The updated symbolism and a new club website were expected to be presented at a celebration marking 110 years of football in Omsk, scheduled for June 9, 2020.[4]
The club’s current emblem, as sourced from the official club website, is a shield-style crest featuring the seagull motif.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The seagull serves as the club’s central symbol and mascot. Its presence on the emblem has been documented in local media as the team’s identifying mark, and it also gave rise to the fan nickname “seagulls.”[1][4]
