Sriwijaya FC, an Indonesian football club based in Palembang, South Sumatra, uses a circular crest that has carried several consistent symbolic elements since the club’s founding in 2004. The club was established on 23 October 2004 after an agreement between the South Sumatra provincial government and the previous club Persijatim.[1]
Design and History
The Sriwijaya FC crest is circular in shape and features the motto “Sumatera Selatan Bersatu Teguh” (South Sumatra United and Steadfast). This motto conveys that the club can serve as a means to realize the complete unity of all communities in South Sumatra Province.[2] The logo has been described as a round emblem dominated by maroon red and golden yellow colors.[3]
An eagle symbol has appeared in the logo from the earliest version through the newer designs.[2] In November 2005, the club replaced its old logo with a Garuda (eagle) emblem because the previous logo was considered to lack impact. According to then-manager Amalsyah Tarmizi, the change was based on input from several parties. The Garuda symbol, also used in the emblem of Kodam II Sriwijaya, was chosen as a symbol of strength and toughness.[4]
The current crest also incorporates the Ampera Bridge, an icon of Palembang, and Mount Dempo. The Ampera Bridge was chosen because it holds historical value and is a source of pride for South Sumatra, while Mount Dempo and the Musi River symbolize the team’s determination.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The yellow base color in the 2005 redesign was described as symbolizing fertility.[4] The eagle figure was depicted clutching a ball, with the Ampera Bridge and Mount Dempo appearing in the background.[4] Because of the eagle symbol that has always adorned the logo, the club has earned the additional nickname “Elang Andalas” (Sumatran Eagle) alongside its primary nickname “Laskar Wong Kito.”[2]
