Valenciennes FC, the French football club based in the northern city of Valenciennes, has used a red shield-shaped crest featuring a white swan since 2008. The swan is the traditional emblem of the city of Valenciennes, and the club describes it as a symbol inseparable from both the city and the club itself.[1]
Design and History
The current crest was introduced in 2008, following the club’s restoration of the Valenciennes FC name. It features a modern red shield with the initials VAFC displayed prominently across the centre, and a white swan stretching across the top of the shield.[2] The swan motif links the modern identity to earlier club crests and symbolises the city of Valenciennes.[2]
The club’s visual identity has evolved considerably since its founding in 1913 as Union Sportive Valenciennes-Anzin (USVA). Early crests featured the golden lion of Hainaut, drawn from the historic coat of arms of the County of Hainaut. A 1976 heraldic shield displayed the initials USVA above two white swans, with the coat of arms of Valenciennes between them. After the club’s bankruptcy and restructuring in 1996, a new identity under the name Association Valenciennes Football Club (AFC) featured a stylised swan flying above the initials AFC. A simplified version appeared in 2006, retaining the AFC lettering, football and swan motif within a bold black circular border.[2]
In 2008, the club unveiled the current crest alongside a new kit for the 2008-2009 season.[3] The new logo was developed by the club’s communication department and realised by illustrator David Charrier.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The swan is the central symbol of the Valenciennes identity. According to a local legend, a princess built a home on the banks of the Escaut river after saving a swan, giving rise to “Val en Cygnes”, which became Valenciennes over time.[1] The swan appears throughout the city, including on the pediment of the train station and the Museum of Fine Arts, as well as on the club’s crest.[5]
The club’s traditional colours are red and white, and supporters are known as the “Rouge et Blanc”.[6] The red and white palette has been a consistent element of the club’s visual identity through its various crest redesigns.[2]
The swan motif extends beyond the crest itself. The scapular stripe on the club’s home shirts has been modernised to take the form of swan wings, a reference to the city symbol.[6]
