The Minnesota Whitecaps were a professional women’s ice hockey team based in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. Founded in 2004, the club competed independently for years before joining the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) as its first expansion team in 2018. The team’s visual identity was completely redesigned that same year to mark its transition into the league.
Design and History
On August 21, 2018, the NWHL unveiled a new logo for the Whitecaps ahead of the team’s inaugural league season. The new brand identity was created by M Style Marketing, a global strategy, marketing and branding agency specializing in sports, entertainment and consumer products. Rob Striar, founder of M Style, described the design process: “The whitecap wave element having the ‘M’ and ‘W’ in the graphic with the use of space for the waves resulted in a truly unique brand.” [1]
The redesign replaced the team’s previous plain black-and-white logo, which had been used during its independent years. [2] The new crest featured a circular format with the word “Minnesota” placed in the outer ring at a slightly off-center angle. [2] The centerpiece was a stylized wave element that could be read as both an “M” for Minnesota and a “W” for Whitecaps, with the two curved peaks resembling whitecaps cresting on water. [3]
The 2018 identity was introduced alongside new uniforms ahead of the team’s first NWHL regular season game on October 6, 2018, at TRIA Rink in Saint Paul. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s central wave motif was designed to function on multiple levels. According to M Style founder Rob Striar, the whitecap wave element incorporates both the “M” and “W” within the graphic, using negative space to create the wave forms. [1] The design was intended to represent “the power and pride that comes with representing the State of Hockey,” a phrase used by the Minnesota Wild in announcing the new crest. [1]
The color palette of the 2018 logo incorporated blue, white, silver and black. [4] Contemporary coverage described the overall thematic colors as black, white and royal blue. [2]
Typography and Design
The 2018 crest used a circular badge format with the team name set in the outer ring. The word “Minnesota” was placed slightly off-center at an angle within that ring, a deliberate design choice noted by observers at the time. [2] The central mark was described as a waved white line with blue trim set against a black circle, with the wave line curved to form crested waves that double as letterforms. [3]
The Whitecaps continued using this identity through the NWHL’s 2021 rebrand as the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). [5] When the PHF ceased operations and the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) was established, the Minnesota market was awarded a new franchise. That team, the Minnesota Frost, unveiled its own identity in September 2024, designed by the New York-based creative agency Flower Shop. [6] The Frost identity is a separate brand from the Whitecaps mark and does not carry forward the 2018 crest.
