Sunderland Association Football Club, known as Sunderland AFC or the Black Cats, has used a heraldic quartered crest since 1997. The design was unveiled in July 1997 to coincide with the club’s move from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light, replacing the ship-based badge associated with the later Roker Park years.[1][2]
Design and History
The 1997 crest features a central shield divided into four quarters. Two of the quarters display regional landmarks: Penshaw Monument appears in the top left, and Wearmouth Bridge is in the bottom right. The two remaining quarters carry the club’s red and white stripes.[1][3]
Supporting either side of the shield are two lions, which also appear on the City of Sunderland’s coat of arms, a reference to the long tradition of mutual support between the club and the city.[1] A colliery wheel crowns the crest, honouring the mining traditions of County Durham and serving as a reminder that the Stadium of Light was built on land once occupied by Wearmouth Colliery.[1][4]
Former chairman Sir Bob Murray took the decision to introduce the new crest as part of the overhaul brought about by the move to the Stadium of Light. He saw it as more contemporary and hoped the switch would end the “sinking ship” analogy used by the press whenever results were poor.[5][3]
The crest has undergone minor modifications since 1997. The club added a gold outer shield during the 2009/10 season, and a red silhouette bordered the main design during the 2018/19 term.[2]
Before the 1997 design, Sunderland used a ship-based badge from the 1970s. The ship reflected the city’s position at the mouth of the River Wear and its long shipbuilding heritage.[6] The club’s first official badge, adopted in 1913, featured a white shield borrowing aspects of the city’s coat of arms, including a knight’s helmet, feathers, a globe, a ribbon and the Latin motto “Nil Desperandum Auspice Deo.”[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The official club description explains the symbolism of the 1997 crest. Wearmouth Bridge, in the bottom right of the shield, links the north and south of the city, while Penshaw Monument, in the top left, acknowledges the depth of support for the team outside the city boundaries.[1][7]
Entwined with the colliery wheel is the club motto, “Consectatio Excellentiae,” Latin for “In pursuit of excellence.”[1][2]
