Cell C is a South African mobile telecommunications operator that launched in 2001 as the country’s third mobile network. The brand has undergone several distinct visual identity changes since its founding, with each refresh reflecting a shift in corporate strategy and market positioning.
Design and History
Cell C’s first logo, introduced at its 2001 launch, consisted of black-and-white text on a red background, accompanied by the tagline “C for yourself.” This identity remained in place until May 2010, when the company underwent its first major network refresh and adopted a logo featuring the letter C within a circle, a design that closely resembled the copyright symbol. The 2010 rebrand also introduced a six-colour bar representing the colours of the South African flag, which the company said symbolised that it “cares about South Africa,” along with the new tagline “The power in your hands.” [1] [2]
The 2010 mark drew legal scrutiny. The Registrar of Trademarks provisionally rejected Cell C’s trademark application, with legal experts pointing to the logo’s resemblance to the copyright symbol as a possible cause. Cell C’s marketing executive, Simon Camerer, responded that the design was not intended to look like the copyright symbol, explaining that the “C” in the centre represented the company putting the customer at the centre of everything it does, with the white space between the black “C” and solid circle symbolic of the customer. [3]
In 2018, Cell C rolled out a new logo and colour scheme, moving to orange and white. A company spokesperson said the shift away from its previous black-and-white logo was part of evolving its brand identity. The 2018 refresh was handled by Johannesburg agency 1886, a subsidiary of the FCB Africa group, whose chief creative officer Stuart Stobbs said the task was to “modernise, simplify and orangify” the brand. The agency deliberately seeded the orange colour gradually before launching the full new logo and the payoff line “Connect your way.” [4] [5]
In August 2024, Cell C unveiled its most recent brand identity at an event at its headquarters in Buccleuch, Johannesburg. The refresh included a new logo, payoff line, audio mnemonic and broader brand redesign, introduced as part of the company’s growth strategy under CEO Jorge Mendes. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2024 logo was designed in partnership with South African brand and communications agency SHIFT. According to the agency, the new identity features an “open double C icon” that speaks to partnership and human centricity. The logo is more open than its predecessor, with the C in the circle having an opening at the right-hand side instead of resembling the closed copyright symbol, representing the company’s desire to be more transparent and open. [7] [8]
Cell C’s orange colour was retained in the 2024 refresh. CEO Jorge Mendes said research indicated the colour resonated well with customers and had worked well in the past, noting that he personally had not initially been a fan of orange but came to respect its power for the brand. [8]
Typography and Design
The 2024 identity introduced an approachable lowercase wordmark alongside the open C-icon. SHIFT described the visual language as reflecting the brand’s commitment to allyship, with the identity rooted in Cell C’s heritage while modernising the brand. The colour palette shifted to black and orange, which SHIFT said aligns with the brand’s edginess. [9] [7]
