Sri Lanka Telecom PLC, the national fixed-line and broadband provider, and its mobile subsidiary SLT Mobitel unveiled a unified brand identity on January 1, 2021, bringing both companies under the single SLT-MOBITEL name. The unification was launched at the SLT Headquarters with the participation of the group’s chairman, group CEO, and other key officials, and was described as a historic step toward strengthening brand equity and supporting the government’s technology-driven economy initiative.[1]
Design and History
The new brand identity was designed to bring the SLT and Mobitel brands together in a setting instantly recognizable to consumers, portraying the unified relationship between the two companies. The change in the logo was underpinned by a companywide realignment and unification of service.[1] According to an interview with SLT-MOBITEL leadership published in LMD magazine, the unified brand logo found its shape and design without incurring additional costs, and the new insignia connects both SLT’s and Mobitel’s brands and identities, expressing the connectivity between the companies.[2]
Following criticism from the Opposition Leader in Parliament that the company had spent Rs. 2 billion on the rebrand, Sri Lanka Telecom issued a statement denying the claim and clarifying that the new corporate logo was designed at a “very marginal cost” and was created merely to reflect the unification of the two brands.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented color symbolism for the SLT-Mobitel identity dates to the earlier Mobitel brand. In 2003, Mobitel’s then-officials explained that blue is the Telecom colour, representing the sky under which the company operates and standing for strength and commitment; green represents environmental friendliness, prosperity, and energy; and white stands for purity and integrity. The standalone big “M” in the earlier Mobitel logo reflected the power of the mobile operator.[4][5]
For the unified SLT-MOBITEL identity introduced in 2021, the company described the insignia as expressing connectivity between the two companies, connecting both brands and identities under one umbrella.[2]
Typography and Design
Brand asset listings for Mobitel document the brand’s color palette as including Endeavour blue (#0056A2) and a green tone, alongside a silver accent.[6] No official documentation of the specific typeface used in the SLT-MOBITEL wordmark has been published in the available sources.
