Digicel El Salvador is the Salvadoran operation of Digicel Group, a telecommunications provider founded in 2001 and headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. The company began operations in El Salvador in September 2006 under the brand El Nuevo Digicel, following the acquisition of the local mobile network operator Digicel Holdings Limited (DHL). Digicel El Salvador is a subsidiary of Digicel Group and operates as a mobile network operator in the country. [1]
Design and History
Digicel’s visual identity has undergone two documented redesigns since the company’s founding. The original logo, introduced in 2001, used a bright red and green color palette, with the brand name written in a handwritten sans-serif typeface where the “D” was capitalized and emboldened. Red was used for the “Digi” portion of the name and green for the “cel” portion. [2]
In 2017, Digicel Group refreshed its logotype. The redesign retained the red coloring of the previous logo but removed the rounded letterforms, resulting in a cleaner, sans-serif wordmark. [3] The 2017 update also coincided with a broader brand consolidation effort, as Digicel’s television and entertainment subsidiary, DigicelPlay, rebranded as Digicel to align more closely with the parent brand. [4]
In 2023, Digicel introduced a new logo and the tagline “Better Together.” The new identity added a smile symbol to the red sans-serif wordmark that had been in use since 2017. The smile symbol is formed by rotating the letter “D” 90 degrees and adding two dots above it, resembling a smiley face. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
Digicel CEO Farid Mohammed explained that the new tagline “Better Together” reflects the company’s relationship with its customers, emphasizing collaboration to create a better future. The smile symbol was designed to bring energy and a friendly, approachable character to the brand, helping to close the distance between the company and its customers. [5]
As a subsidiary of Digicel Group, Digicel El Salvador uses the same parent brand identity across its operations in the country, including its official website and customer-facing materials. [6]
