Three UK, officially Hutchison 3G UK Limited, is the British mobile network operator that launched the UK’s first commercial 3G network on 3 March 2003 under the brand Three, stylised as “3”.[1] The brand identity has undergone several distinct visual phases, from a colourful launch mark to a simplified monochrome logo and, most recently, a refreshed visual identity with a warmer colour scheme.
Design and History
The original 3 logo, unveiled in October 2002 ahead of the March 2003 launch, was described by the Hutchison Whampoa Group as having “a light titanium outside and a dynamic, playful, vibrant inside, animating through the whole spectrum of colour”.[2] Contemporary design commentary recalled the launch mark as a semi-translucent, glowing form with hot-rod flames running down one side, an aesthetic that drew both fascination and criticism.[3]
In May 2010, 3 underwent a significant brand refresh. The operator simplified its logo into a single monochrome design and changed how it wrote its name from “3” to “Three”.[4] The logo was changed to black and white, ending the previous multicolour format, and incorporated the web address three.co.uk.[5] A company spokesperson said the refresh was designed to be “a more approachable look”, with the incorporation of Three.co.uk reflecting the drive to be “the home of the mobile internet”.[4] The brand typeface was also changed as part of the new look.[5]
In July 2021, Three UK launched a new visual identity and brand platform, “Life Needs a Big Network”, marking what the company described as its “coming of age” almost two decades after launch.[6] The platform was developed with Wonderhood Studios, while the accompanying visual identity work was conducted as a joint project by Wham, Three’s global design agency, and Wonderhood Studios.[6] Wham described its role as UK and international brand guardian, collaborating with Three UK and Wonderhood Studios to reinvigorate the telco brand, including the creation of full brand guidelines.[7]
Notably, the 2021 refresh did not change the core “3” logo itself. Industry reporting at the time observed that “the ‘3’ with flamey jagged lines logo is unchanged”, with the update better described as a new visual identity rather than a rebrand.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 visual identity introduced a new, warmer colour scheme to Three’s marketing, reflecting what the company described as “the next chapter for the business”.[6] Advertising trade press reported that the branding would include a new colour, a shade of peachy orange, in contrast to the former minimalist white colour scheme, designed to show up better in print, outdoor and on social feeds.[9]
Wham stated that the refresh “came to life in a distinctive new colour system and an infinite canvas of experiences, navigated by mobile movements”.[7] Aidan McClure, founder and chief creative officer of Wonderhood Studios, said the new look would “help Three to feel vibrant and more distinctive”.[10]
Typography and Design
Documented typography changes for the Three UK identity are limited to the 2010 refresh, when the brand typeface was changed as part of the new monochrome look.[5] No specific typeface name has been officially confirmed in available sources. The 2010 refresh also saw the brand name written as “Three” rather than the numeric form “3”, with the logo incorporating the three.co.uk web address.[4]
