Verizon Fios is the fiber-optic home internet, television, and phone service brand operated by Verizon Communications. The service launched in 2004 with Fios Internet in Keller, Texas, followed by Fios TV in 2005, and the brand name is short for “Fiber Optic Service.”[1][2]
Design and History
The Fios wordmark consists of “FIOS” in lowercase lettering followed by a graphic check mark, according to the trademark registration filed by Verizon Trademark Services LLC with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2017.[3] The check mark design element is shared with the broader Verizon corporate identity, which adopted a red check mark as part of its 2015 rebrand by the design agency Pentagram.[4]
In June 2024, Verizon introduced a new corporate logo, replacing its check mark with a red “V” surrounded by a yellow glow.[5] The company described the new mark as anchoring in the Verizon name, drawing from “Veritas” (truth) and “Horizon” (the future of possibility).[5] The refresh was described by Verizon’s chief marketing officer as pulling inspiration from the company’s heritage while infusing energy and vibrancy.[5]
In early 2025, Verizon began rebranding Fios Internet as “Verizon Home Internet,” consolidating its home internet offerings under a unified banner while continuing to offer fiber-optic service under the new name.[6] Verizon’s current website lists “Fios Home Internet” as one of its home internet plan options, described as a 100% fiber-optic network.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Fios check mark element mirrors the check mark used in Verizon’s corporate identity. When Verizon introduced its 2015 logo, the company stated that the check mark is “the universal symbol for getting things done” and “uniquely expresses the reliability of Verizon.”[8] Pentagram partner Michael Bierut, who led the 2015 design, said the update was intended to allow the brand to scale easily across different media rather than to be “clever or flashy.”[9]
The 2024 corporate logo change to a red “V” with a yellow glow was described by Verizon as reflecting the root words of its name, “veritas” and “horizon.”[10] A Verizon Consumer chief revenue officer said the refresh was meant to make the brand “more approachable” and “more emotionally connected,” noting that the previous identity was “very slick, very elegant, black, white and red, but a bit cold.”[11]
Typography and Design
The 2015 Verizon corporate logo, which influenced the Fios mark, used upright, all-black Helvetica type with a thin red check mark placed after the final letter.[9] The previous Verizon logo, designed by Landor Associates in 2000, featured an oversized red check mark above the wordmark.[12] The Fios trademark registration describes its mark simply as “FIOS” in lowercase lettering followed by a check mark graphic, without specifying a typeface.[3]
