Comcast Corporation, the American media and technology company, has used a logo featuring the NBC peacock since December 2012. The mark combines the colorful peacock, an NBC symbol since 1956, with the Comcast wordmark, and was introduced ahead of the company’s 50th anniversary in 2013.[1][2]
Design and History
Before the 2012 redesign, Comcast’s corporate logo featured a large red letter “C” with a crescent shape, a design the company had used since 1999.[1][3] The new logo, unveiled at an internal staff meeting in December 2012, placed the NBC peacock above the Comcast name in a new, thinner uppercase typeface.[1]
The change came nearly two years after Comcast acquired a 51 percent stake in NBCUniversal. In early 2011, NBCUniversal had dropped the peacock from its own logo as part of a redesign, a move that drew criticism from long-time employees.[1] The new Comcast logo was designed to bring the peacock back into the corporate identity. A Comcast spokeswoman said at the time: “The peacock is one of the most recognizable brands in America, and if you look at the iconic peacock with the modern new font for Comcast, it brings together the whole concept of media and technology.”[1][4]
The font used in the 2012 logo was specially created by the global design firm frog, known for its work on Apple products in the 1980s.[5] The company considered a name change during the rebranding process but ultimately decided to keep the Comcast name, a combination of “communications” and “broadcast.”[5]
Comcast updated the logo again in January 2024. The change, which became official on January 10, 2024, swapped the lighter, geometric sans serif typeface for slightly thicker lettering and added a glass-shine effect to the peacock.[6] The update was described as giving the logo a “new, stronger typeface.”[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The NBC peacock first debuted at NBC in 1956, when the network switched to color television.[2][4] By incorporating the peacock into the Comcast corporate logo, the company visually linked its corporate identity with its NBCUniversal entertainment properties. The design was described by Comcast as bringing together “the whole concept of media and technology.”[1]
Typography and Design
The 2012 logo used a custom font created by the design firm frog, featuring a thin, uppercase letterform.[5][1] The 2024 update replaced this with slightly thicker lettering, described as a “stronger typeface,” while retaining the peacock symbol above the wordmark.[6]
