Taiwan Star Telecom Corporation Limited, known as T Star (台灣之星), is a Taiwanese mobile network operator that launched its brand identity in 2014. The company’s visual identity is notable for its deliberately minimal approach: a typographic wordmark without a pictorial symbol, a choice that set it apart from Taiwan’s established telecom carriers.
Design and History
T Star unveiled its corporate identity system (CIS) at a brand launch event on June 24, 2014, ahead of its 4G service rollout. According to the company, the logo consists solely of the Chinese characters “台灣之星” and the English text “T STAR” set in a simple typeface, with no accompanying corporate emblem or icon. The stated rationale was to “minimize the enterprise and maximize the customer,” a philosophy developed through internal debate and consumer research that led the company to reject conventional telecom branding conventions.[1][2]
The company’s corporate identity color was reported as purple at the 2014 launch, with the logo itself rendered in a simple typographic treatment.[1] A 2018 profile of the brand described the logo as “clean, simple typography” without the concrete pictorial symbols used by Taiwan’s three major telecom operators, characterizing the approach as deliberately “rebellious” for a challenger brand.[3]
In March 2020, T Star introduced a separate 5G service logo. The new mark combined the “T” from the T Star brand name with an “X” as its central motif. The “X” was designed to convey three meanings associated with 5G network services: “Unknown,” “Collaboration,” and “Multiple.”[4] The 5G identity won a gold award in a brand identity competition in January 2021.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The original 2014 T Star wordmark was intentionally devoid of symbolic imagery. Company statements emphasized that the logo featured only the Chinese and English brand names in type, with no corporate emblem, reflecting the philosophy of putting customers before the corporate brand.[1][2]
The 2020 5G logo carried explicit symbolism. Its “X” motif represented “Unknown” opportunities, “Collaboration,” and “Multiple” or multiplication, describing the anticipated impact of 5G technology. The mark also incorporated the “T” from the T Star brand name as an identification element for the company’s 5G services.[4]
Typography and Design
Both the 2014 corporate wordmark and the 2020 5G logo were registered as trademarks with the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office in black (described as “ink color” in official records). The original wordmark registration, filed in May 2014, covered the Chinese text “台灣之星” alongside the English “T STAR” as a flat, two-dimensional mark.[6] A subsequent August 2014 filing registered a version described as “T STAR台灣之星 (simplified characters) and design (all-black design).”[7]
The 5G identity, developed by designer Charles Lai, was built as a modular system around a dynamic “X” shape. According to Lai, the X was “lifted from the diagonal of the brand’s T, mirrored to signal connection, multiplication and the unknown.” The system used a high-energy magenta accent balanced with black-and-white clarity, and was applied across photography framing, UI animation, and signage.[8]
