The ABC Network logo is the visual identity of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), a major U.S. commercial broadcast television network. The mark consists of lowercase letters “abc” enclosed within a circular container, a design that has remained structurally consistent since its introduction in 1962.
Design and History
The ABC circle logo was designed by Paul Rand and introduced in the fall of 1962. Rand himself described the mark as “pure geometry,” noting that it “deals with four circles, three of which also happened to be letters.” [1] The circular motif has been referred to internally as the “globe” or the “dot.” [2]
In 2021, ABC introduced a significant update to the logo, working with branding agency Trollbäck+Company. [3] The refresh removed the glossy, three-dimensional rendering that had been applied in previous decades and returned the mark to a flat graphic design. [4] The lowercase letters were slightly reduced in size, and the circles inside the letters became the basis for a new on-air ID animation system. [3]
Designer Stephen Kelleher, who worked on the refresh, described the project as the “first significant update to the ABC masterbrand logo since Paul Rand’s original 1962 design.” According to Kelleher, the goals were “equity retention,” honoring Rand’s legacy while subtly strengthening the letterforms, and “functional improvement,” removing stylistic renderings to optimize cross-platform attribution and legibility at smaller scales. [3] The new logo launched on-air on August 9, 2021. [5]
Earlier iterations of the logo included a 2007 redesign that gave the mark a glassy, three-dimensional appearance, and a 2013 revision by design agency LoyalKaspar that returned the lettering closer to Rand’s original version while retaining a gloss finish. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Rand’s own commentary on the logo focused on its geometric construction rather than symbolic meaning. He noted that the mark’s strength lay in its simplicity and durability, remarking that changing a logo that had been in use for more than a quarter century should not be done “except for good business reasons.” [1]
In the 2021 update, Trollbäck+Company described rebuilding the logo “from scratch, beginning with three perfect circles” to create a “perfectly uniform 3-circle motif as the basis for a larger brand system.” [4] The circles within the letters “a,” “b,” and “c” were used to develop the network’s new animation and branding system. [3]
Typography and Design
The 2021 refresh used a custom redrawing of the lowercase letterforms rather than an off-the-shelf typeface. Kelleher described the process as “robust redrawing” that reinforced “the essence of the original” while establishing a uniform three-circle motif. [3] The space between the letterforms and the circular container was increased to improve integrity at smaller scales, allowing both fill and outline versions to coexist within the same footprint. [3]
For the broader brand system, ABC adopted Heldane and GT America as its primary fonts, described by network executives as “timeless, unique and bold, as well as very versatile.” [3] The network’s color palette of red, white, and black, in use for 18 years prior to the refresh, continued with the new design, modernized with gradients and secondary color palettes. [3] In on-air applications, the logo has appeared in black and a distinct shade of red. [5]
