Telkom Indonesia, formally PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, is Indonesia’s state-owned digital telecommunications company. Its current corporate logo, introduced in 2013, uses a red, white, black, and gray palette that the company ties directly to the colors of the Indonesian flag.
Design and History
The current Telkom Indonesia logo was launched on 17 August 2013, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day. The launch was framed as a commitment by Telkom to give its best for the nation, and the change was described as a comprehensive color change integrated with four fundamental corporate aspects: business transformation, infrastructure, systems and operating models, and human resources.[1]
Before this, Telkom had introduced a new logo on 23 October 2009, marking its 153rd anniversary. That redesign was part of a fundamental business transformation from an information and communication company into a Telecommunications, Information, Media and Edutainment (TIME) company.[2] The 2009 identity was created with the consultancy Brand Union, and the company reported spending Rp 3.2 billion on the change, which included creating a new brand identity and replacing all old logos at Telkom plazas.[2] The 2009 rebrand also introduced the tagline “The World in Your Hand.”[3]
The 2013 change was described by Telkom’s then-Director Utama Arief Yahya as a color refresh from blue and yellow to red and white,[4] with the shape of the logo remaining unchanged.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Telkom’s official brand guidelines, the logo consists of an asymmetric circle symbolizing the world and corporate dynamism, combined with a hand icon representing the tagline “The World in Your Hand.” The company states that the red, white, and gray transition colors reflect the red and white of Indonesia’s national identity.[6]
Telkom’s official color philosophy for the 2013 logo assigns specific meanings: red represents courage, love, energy, and perseverance, reflecting Telkom’s spirit to remain optimistic and brave in facing challenges; white represents purity, peace, light, and unity, reflecting Telkom’s spirit to give its best for the nation; black symbolizes strong will; and gray, as a transition color, reflects technology.[1]
Typography and Design
Telkom’s official brand guidelines specify Gotham Rounded as the primary corporate font and Gotham as the secondary font. The company states that the rounded letterforms of Gotham Rounded, combined with a mix of uppercase and lowercase characters, reflect a natural balance, and the use of lowercase letters is intended to make the brand feel more familiar and friendly.[6]
The logo is available in primary (vertical) and secondary (horizontal) versions, both featuring the two-line or one-line logotype, the asymmetric circle icon, the hand icon, and the tagline. The tagline is optional on the secondary version.[6]
