Assist A.S.B.L. is a Belgian travel assistance organization whose 1966 logo is attributed to the noted Belgian graphic designer Michel Olyff. Olyff, born in Antwerp in 1927, was a prolific creator of logos and emblems, including marks for the RTBF, the Loterie Nationale, Europalia, and the UNESCO World Heritage programme.[1]
Design and History
Michel Olyff studied at La Cambre under Joris Minne and was associated with the Cobra movement in his early career.[2] His graphic work spanned pure research and applied design, including marks and emblems, posters, postage stamps, signage, and book illustration.[2]
The Assist A.S.B.L. logo dates to 1966, a period when Olyff was already an established designer. He joined the Alliance Graphique Internationale in that same year.[3] The mark was created for the Belgian travel organization, though detailed documentation of the commission itself is limited.
Meaning and Symbolism
Olyff’s design for Assist A.S.B.L. employs clean, geometric forms intended to suggest movement and direction. The abstract shape evokes a stylized compass or a guiding hand, reflecting the organization’s focus on assistance and travel. The design is characteristic of mid-century modernism, prioritizing clarity and memorability over complex imagery.
