The Fairfield Stags are the NCAA Division I athletic teams of Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The university’s visual identity centers on the stag, a reference rooted in the school’s seal, which depicts a deer leaping over a stream. The word “Hartford” historically meant stag (hart) and stream (ford), and Fairfield’s seal features a deer crossing a brook, a connection that led the Board of Trustees to adopt the stag as the mascot in 1948.[1]
Design and History
Fairfield University introduced a new institutional identity in May 1997, featuring the university’s name in New Baskerville typeface alongside a shield graphic depicting a flowing white banner bearing a cross and a stag fording a stream.[2] That press release noted the athletic teams were known as the Stags and quoted the university’s alma mater, which opens with the line “Fairfield! See the stag with cross of Gold rears once more its undefeated head.”[2]
Prior to the current marks, the athletics program used a stag’s head design on a large red letter “U” from 1991 to 2001.[3] In 2001, a new logo was introduced that removed the background “U” and featured the stag’s head turned to the right.[4]
In January 2021, Fairfield announced a significant evolution of its visual identity. After 20 years, the university retired its combined “F-Stag” logo, giving the separate Fairfield F logo and the Stag Head logo their own distinct roles. According to the university, the separate Fairfield F logo “echoes the tried and true feel of other nationally recognized institutions of higher education,” while the Stag Head logo “embodies the spirit of Fairfield University’s Division I Athletics teams.”[5] Both logos continue to be used, but are now featured separately on clothing, merchandise, and promotional materials.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The stag imagery in Fairfield’s identity derives from the university’s seal, which shows a deer leaping over a stream. This design references the historical meaning of “Hartford” as stag (hart) and stream (ford), and the school was part of the diocese of Hartford when the mascot was chosen in 1948.[1] The university’s alma mater also references the stag “with cross of Gold,” connecting the animal imagery to the institution’s Jesuit heritage.[2]
Typography and Design
The 1997 university identity used New Baskerville typeface for the institution’s name.[2] The school color is cardinal red.[7] Fairfield University maintains a central brand resource page where official logos, templates, and brand standards are available to the university community.[8]
