Paddle is a payments infrastructure platform for software and SaaS companies, founded in 2012 in the United Kingdom. The company’s current visual identity, introduced in 2022, replaced an earlier blue-toned brand with a yellow wordmark built around a North Star symbol.
Design and History
Paddle’s original brand, used from roughly 2012 to 2022, was described by the company as friendly, artistic, and approachable, featuring a pink cat mascot named Kino and a blue color scheme that one discovery-session participant called “Series A blue.”[1] By early 2022, Paddle’s leadership concluded the existing identity no longer matched the company’s scale or customer base, which had grown from Mac software sellers to global SaaS businesses at all stages.[1]
Paddle worked with the brand transformation agency Butchershop on a full rebrand, announced in February 2022.[1][2] Butchershop’s audit found that the previous brand expression, with clashing aqua colors and tax-focused messaging, did not communicate Paddle’s full value as a complete payments infrastructure.[2] The rebrand introduced the rallying cry “Go there,” repositioning Paddle from a tax troubleshooter to a global gateway for software companies.[2]
The new identity was executed by Paddle’s internal team based on the brand system delivered by Butchershop, including a redesigned website using yellow and white text on a black background.[2][3] Paddle’s in-house illustrators created the brand imagery with art direction from Butchershop.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current Paddle logo is a lowercase wordmark in which the vertical stroke of the “P” contains a four-pointed star. The symbol was inspired by the North Star, a navigation symbol suggesting that Paddle guides companies to “what’s next.”[2][3] The star is constructed from perfect circular geometry that is translated into the letterforms of the wordmark for consistency.[4]
The North Star concept came directly from discovery conversations with Paddle sellers, one of whom described how every SaaS company has its own North Star, whether that is staying bootstrapped, hitting a revenue metric, or preparing for an IPO.[1] The wider brand imagery explores themes of travel into the unknown, featuring maps and badges that suggest a voyage completed to a new destination, in a style referencing 1980s science fiction.[2][4]
Typography and Design
The Paddle wordmark uses lowercase, medium-bold geometric sans-serif lettering with a stylized vertical stroke on the “P” that houses the North Star symbol.[4] The logo is typically rendered in yellow, sometimes appearing in black against a yellow background.[2] The brand’s yellow color replaced the previous blue palette, a shift Paddle’s Head of Brand described as saying “bye-bye to blue and hello to yellow.”[1]
