Tapatío is a tequila brand produced at La Alteña distillery in Arandas, Jalisco. The distillery opened in 1937, while tequila was first sold under the Tapatío name in 1940. The name refers to a person from Guadalajara or Jalisco. Beam Suntory’s history describes the distillery’s beginnings, and Velier also records the 1940 debut.
Meaning and history
The earlier label brought together the TAPATIO wordmark and dancers identified in trade coverage as El Charro and La China, associated with the Jarabe Tapatío. The brand’s 2025 redesign announcement says the bottle format was replaced; the dancers were retained in a more minimal form and etched into the glass. Speciality Brands’ announcement describes the packaging changes, while The Spirits Business reports the logo details.
Today

This artwork shows magenta script reading “Tequila” above bold yellow TAPATIO lettering with a dark outline. It is an earlier version, not the current identity: Tapatío announced a portfolio-wide redesign on 17 November 2025. The announcement describes an updated logo with a contemporary font, a new “TT” symbol and the number “37.” The dancers were retained in simplified form on the redesigned bottle. Speciality Brands and The Spirits Business report these changes.
Current identity
The 2025 redesign is the later documented identity. Its packaging pairs the updated logo and “37” with a textured label and an agave-inspired bottle. The rollout began with Blanco in the UK in late November 2025, followed by Reposado in December and the rest of the range in 2026, according to the launch announcement. No designer or font name is credited in the cited coverage.
