Merrell is an outdoor footwear and apparel brand founded in 1981. The brand’s core identity pairs an uppercase MERRELL wordmark with a circular emblem containing an M. The supplied artwork shows variations in how those elements are arranged and rendered; the archive’s stage labels are useful identifiers, but they should not be read as verified redesign dates. Merrell’s brand history describes its beginnings as a hiking-boot maker.

Merrell’s wordmark and M emblem
The identity combines the brand name in uppercase with a compact M symbol. In the stage artwork, the M appears as a light shape against an orange circular ground; other supplied artwork shows the wordmark and badge together or the wordmark alone. These are visible variations in the archive, not evidence of who designed the mark or when each version entered use.

1981 – 2007
The archive groups this artwork under the 1981 – 2007 heading. It shows a large orange circle with an oversized, light-colored M, crossed by a white MERRELL wordmark. Compared with the later horizontal lock-up in the next stage, this composition gives the emblem most of the visual weight and places the name across it.

2007 – 2017
Here, the name runs horizontally in orange uppercase letters, with a small circular M badge at the right. The arrangement reverses the emphasis of the preceding artwork: the wordmark leads, while the emblem serves as a compact companion. The heading is an archive label rather than a documented redesign date.

2018 – Today
The artwork shown with this heading is a red-orange MERRELL wordmark with a registered-mark symbol, without the circular M badge. The image therefore differs from the identity described in Merrell’s documented later brand programmes: the brief confirms that the core identity remains the wordmark with the orange circular M emblem, extended rather than replaced by subsequent work.

Later identity work
Merrell’s identity work extended beyond the logo. Sixième Son describes creating a sonic identity as part of a 2021 brand-identity revamp. In 2026, Campaign reported that Merrell introduced “It Starts Outside,” its first unified global brand platform, created with Uncommon Creative Studio. These programmes provide context for the brand’s wider identity, without establishing new dates for the archive’s logo stages.
Origins
Merrell’s history traces the brand to 1981, when Clark Matis and John Schweizer, formerly of Rossignol, partnered with custom bootmaker Randal Ivan Merrell. The company’s history identifies Matis and Schweizer as founders who joined forces with R.I. Merrell. Wolverine World Wide acquired Merrell in 1997, according to Merrell’s innovation history.
