The Miu Miu wordmark

Miu Miu launched in 1993 as a Prada Group label founded by Miuccia Prada. Its name comes from her family nickname. The brand’s lowercase wordmark repeats “Miu” without a separate pictorial symbol. The Prada Group’s 2011 listing document dates the launch to 1993.

The 1993 logotype is credited to designer Italo Lupi and Studio Lupi. Archivio Grafica Italiana describes its repeated forms as drawing on the nickname and the alliteration of the name. The compact mark relies on the lettering itself: the same three-letter unit appears twice, with no added emblem. Archivio Grafica Italiana’s project record gives the design credit and describes the forms; an NSS Magazine obituary also credits Lupi with the logo.

The wordmark is registered as stylized words or letters. In the cited United States registration records, color is not claimed as a feature of the mark. These details appear in the USPTO registration certificates.

2018: typography and a monogram

In 2018, M/M (Paris) created Miu Miu Type, an alphabet of 26 letterforms drawing on female faces and bodies. The project was associated with the fall/winter 2018 show and extended onto garments. The Prada Group Journal describes the type project, and Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2019 show page documents its presentation.

That October, M/M (Paris) also developed an overlapping, three-dimensional monogram, shown as an installation for spring/summer 2019. The letterforms were adapted into animated “e-MIU-ticons.” Numéro’s report describes the monogram, while Miu Miu’s show page documents the related digital work. This added a graphic layer to the identity; it did not replace the familiar wordmark.

Color and presentation

The two supplied wordmark images show the same lettering in contrasting presentations: dark lettering on black in the first, and black lettering on white in the second. The trademark records’ statement that color is not claimed as a feature is consistent with treating color as a presentation choice rather than a defining part of the registered mark.

1993 – Today

Miu Miu Logo

The lowercase wordmark remains part of Miu Miu’s identity alongside the 2018 typography and monogram. Miu Miu’s fashion-show page continues to reference the Miu Miu Type and overlapping-letter work, while the 1993 wordmark is still presented as a distinct, recognizable mark. The two treatments are complementary rather than successive replacements.
