The Ralph Lauren identity pairs a single polo player on horseback, mallet raised, with the name RALPH LAUREN in uppercase serif capitals. The player is rendered as a compact silhouette, while the wordmark is built from high-contrast lettering. The rider is commonly called the Polo Pony.

Meaning and history
1967 – Today
Ralph Lauren began in 1967 with a men’s necktie line named Polo. Business of Fashion reports that the first-year tie sales reached about $500,000. The Pony came later: it appeared on women’s tailored shirts in 1971, first on a cuff, according to the Vintage Fashion Guild’s label archive. In 1972 it was embroidered on the chest of the multicolour mesh polo shirt, a placement that helped make the emblem widely recognizable, as GQ recounts.

Current symbol
The core identity remains the single mounted player and the uppercase wordmark. Trademark filings describe the polo-player symbol as one rider on horseback with a raised mallet; the records also include multi-colour versions. The single rider is distinct from the two-player mark used by the separate U.S. Polo Association, a distinction discussed in Lexology’s account of the litigation between the organizations.
A Ralph Lauren trademark application filed in 1986 claimed first use of the polo-player mark on woven labels in July 1972, according to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board record. In a separate proceeding, the company pleaded that its POLO marks had been used as early as 1967; that claim concerns the word mark, not the Pony’s documented 1971 appearance, as shown in the opposition filing.
The rider has also received a special variation: a 2022 Fortnite collaboration featured a redesigned Pony, reported by Marketing-Interactive as the first redesign in five decades. This collaboration did not replace the core identity.
Variations of the emblem
The identity appears in different lockups. One combines the rider with RALPH LAUREN, while another pairs the name POLO with RALPH LAUREN in a larger, stacked arrangement. The emblem can also be used without the wordmark. These configurations preserve the distinction between the compact rider silhouette and the larger letterforms.

Font
The wordmark uses uppercase serif capitals with pronounced thick-and-thin strokes. The two supplied wordmark treatments show the lettering both in a single line and arranged on two lines; the Polo Ralph Lauren version gives POLO greater visual prominence.

Color
Black on a light ground is a clear, familiar rendering of the mark, but the identity is not limited to monochrome: trademark filings also cover multi-colour polo-player versions. On clothing, thread and fabric can change the emblem’s colour without changing its basic silhouette.

What is the difference between Ralph Lauren and Polo?
Ralph Lauren Corporation is the company; Polo Ralph Lauren is one of its brand lines, listed alongside labels including Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label and Double RL in the company’s brand portfolio material. The Polo Pony and related marks are registered to PRL USA Holdings, Inc., according to the trademark proceeding.
Who invented the Polo Pony?
The Pony is the emblem associated with Ralph Lauren’s brand. Its documented early appearances are on women’s shirt cuffs in 1971 and on the chest of a mesh polo shirt in 1972, as described by the Vintage Fashion Guild and GQ.
Is it Ralph Lauren or Polo Ralph Lauren?
Both names belong to the Ralph Lauren brand portfolio: Ralph Lauren is the broader company and brand name, while Polo Ralph Lauren is a specific line. The Pony and wordmark appear in configurations associated with both names.
