The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is an American commercial television network. Its current logo, a black circle containing lowercase white letters “abc,” descends directly from a design created by graphic designer Paul Rand in 1962. The mark has been modified several times since, most recently in 2021, when the network returned to a flat, simplified version of Rand’s original concept.
Design and History
Paul Rand designed the ABC logo in 1961, and it was introduced on-air in the fall of 1962 at the start of the 1962-63 season. The design placed the lowercase letters “abc” inside a single black circle. Rand himself described the mark as “pure geometry,” noting that it “deals with four circles, three of which also happened to be letters.” [1]
The logo underwent several revisions over the decades. In 1988, ABC modified the mark to maintain clarity at small sizes. In 2007, the network introduced a more three-dimensional version with highlights and shadows, developed by the Los Angeles design firm Troika Design Group. In 2013, the logo was revised again by the agency LoyalKaspar, which simplified the gloss effect and returned the lettering closer to Rand’s original version. [2]
In 2021, ABC worked with branding agency Trollbäck to refresh the logo once more. The new version removed the glossy, three-dimensional styling entirely, returning to a flat graphic mark. The letters were slightly reduced in size, and the circular counters inside the letters were made more uniform. The refresh launched on-air on August 9, 2021. [3]
Designer Stephen Kelleher, who worked on the 2021 refresh, described the project as addressing “consistency issues as well as the technical limitations of the logo.” He noted that the goal was “equity retention” of Rand’s legacy while making “functional improvements” for cross-platform use, including increasing the space between the letterform and the circle container for better legibility at small scales. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Rand’s design is built on a simple geometric concept: the lowercase letters “a,” “b,” and “c” each contain a circular counter, and together with the enclosing circle they form a system of four circles. Rand himself emphasized the geometric purity of the mark, stating that “circles are circles” and that the design’s strength lay in its simplicity and recognizability. [1]
In the 2021 refresh, Trollbäck described rebuilding the logo “from scratch, beginning with three perfect circles,” establishing a uniform three-circle motif as the basis for a larger brand system. The circles inside the letters became the foundation for the network’s new ID animation system. [4]
Typography and Design
The ABC logotype is a custom letterform designed by Paul Rand, not a commercially available typeface. In the 2013 revision, a custom typeface called “ABC Modern,” inspired by the ABC logotype, was created for use in advertising and promotional materials. [2]
For the 2021 refresh, ABC adopted the typefaces Heldane and GT America for its broader brand communications. Shannon Ryan, president of content marketing at Hulu and Disney General Entertainment, described the fonts as “timeless, unique and bold, as well as very versatile.” [3]
ABC has used red, white, and black as its color palette for over 18 years, and this continued with the 2021 refresh, though the palette was modernized with gradients and additional secondary colors. [3]
