CoinMarketCap is a cryptocurrency price-tracking website founded in 2013 by Brandon Chez. Its visual identity centers on a stylized letter “M” that doubles as an “@” symbol, paired with a wordmark. The brand underwent a significant rebrand in 2018 to mark its fifth anniversary.
Design and History
In April 2018, CoinMarketCap unveiled a new logo and site design to celebrate its fifth anniversary. The company described the new mark as representing “the CMC of CoinMarketCap and the ups and downs of the markets.”[1] The logo was designed to reflect the volatility of cryptocurrency markets, with the letter “M” visually echoing the rises and falls seen in price charts.[2]
The rebrand accompanied the launch of CoinMarketCap’s first mobile application for iOS, along with a redesigned website interface and an updated public API.[3] The new brand identity was announced in a blog post by CEO Brandon Chez, who said the company wanted to do “something big” for its users on the anniversary.[4]
The current logo features a bold handwritten letter “M” stylized like the “@” symbol, which serves as the platform’s icon. For square icon applications, the mark appears as a white stylized “M” on a solid blue background.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s central element, the stylized “M,” is designed to represent the initials “CMC” for CoinMarketCap while simultaneously evoking the ups and downs of cryptocurrency markets.[1] The “@” styling of the letter connects the brand to its digital, internet-native origins. The brand’s primary blue color is documented as hex code #3861FB, identified as “Dodger Blue” in brand color references.[5]
Typography and Design
In a later brand refinement, the design firm Nessen Company worked with CoinMarketCap to professionalize its image while retaining the “rebellious spirit of crypto culture.” The firm refined the brand’s type system “for a more distinguished look” and further developed the color palette to deepen the brand’s use of blue.[6] The visual identity was designed to look toward traditional financial publications while incorporating technical elements and halftone patterns that adapt to diverse subject matter.[6]
