Primecoin (XPM) is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency launched in July 2013 by Sunny King, the pseudonymous creator of Peercoin. It was the first cryptocurrency designed with a proof-of-work system that searches for chains of prime numbers, giving its computational work scientific value beyond securing the network. The currency symbol for Primecoin is the Greek letter psi (Ψ).
Design and History
The Primecoin identity centers on the Greek letter psi (Ψ), which serves as both the currency symbol and the core of the logo. The choice of psi was deliberate: it pays tribute to mathematician Bernhard Riemann, as its shape symbolizes the Riemann zeta function, a graphical rendering of which was used in the Primecoin-Qt Windows setup screen. The horizontal bar through the psi follows standard currency symbol convention and also symbolizes the Riemann hypothesis, described in the project’s FAQ as “one of the highest jewels of math.” [1]
In late 2013, the Primecoin community opened an official logo feedback and design thread on Peercointalk to develop a finalized, high-quality version of the logo. Community members emphasized that the psi symbol had to be included, as it was the main symbol chosen by Sunny King, and that it needed the horizontal line through the bottom to indicate it was a currency symbol. [2]
Design proposals in that thread included a version from a designer referred to as “hp” that incorporated a Sack’s spiral, a variant of the Ulam spiral, as a background element. The spiral was intended to add visual interest to the classic psi form, though it was noted that the spiral would fade out if the image was down-sampled. [3]
By March 2014, a set of official Primecoin logo files was made available for download, including versions for dark and light backgrounds, a 16×16 icon, and source files in PSD, SVG, EPS, and JPG formats. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The psi symbol’s connection to the Riemann zeta function is central to Primecoin’s identity. The project’s proof-of-work searches for Cunningham chains and bi-twin chains, whose distribution traces its lineage to Riemann’s work and the prime number theorem. The horizontal bar in the currency symbol was noted in the official FAQ as symbolizing the Riemann hypothesis. [1]
Community discussions also connected the psi symbol to the second Chebyshev function ψ(x), which is used with the Riemann zeta function to estimate prime density. [5]
