Google Pixel is Google’s consumer hardware brand, introduced with the Pixel smartphone line in October 2016 as the company’s first family of products made by Google itself, combining hardware and software under one brand.[1] The brand’s visual identity centers on Google’s stylized “G” mark, which has appeared on the rear of every Pixel phone since the first generation launched in 2016.[2]
Design and History
The Pixel brand’s defining visual element is the stylized “G” logo placed on the back of each device. This mark has remained constant across the product line even as the phones’ shapes, sizes, and camera designs changed dramatically between the 2016 Pixel and the 2023 Pixel 8 series.[2] The “G” appears on Pixel phones, tablets, and laptops, functioning similarly to the Apple logo on iPhones and MacBooks as a signature brand identifier.[2]
In March 2024, Google filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the Pixel “G” design. The filing described the mark as “a stylized G on the back of a mobile device,” with the device outline shown in broken lines to indicate placement rather than as part of the mark itself.[2] The trademark registration covers only smartphones, not tablets or laptops.[2]
The “G” logo’s position on Pixel devices has shifted over time. On early Pixel models, the mark sat lower on the rear panel. Starting with the Pixel 7 series in 2022, the “G” was repositioned to the exact center of the device’s back.[3]
In May 2025, Google updated its “G” logo for the first time since September 2015, replacing the sharp color blocks with a smooth gradient transition between the traditional red, yellow, green, and blue. The updated mark initially appeared on Pixel phones and in the Google app on iOS devices.[4] The new design retains the four brand colors but blends them fluidly rather than keeping them in separate segments.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “G” logo on Pixel devices serves as a direct brand identifier, distinguishing Google’s hardware from other Android manufacturers. Its consistent presence across generations has made it a recognizable symbol of the Pixel line, similar to how the Apple logo identifies iPhones.[2] The trademark filing itself describes the mark simply as a stylized “G” on the back of a mobile device, with no additional symbolic meaning claimed in the registration.[2]
Typography and Design
The Pixel “G” mark derives from Google’s broader brand identity. Google introduced its current sans-serif wordmark and multicolored “G” icon in September 2015, replacing the previous logo design.[4] The “G” on Pixel devices uses this same stylized letterform, rendered in a single color on the device’s rear panel. On the Pixel 4, for example, the “G” appeared in grey or silver.[6]
Google’s proprietary typeface, Product Sans, is a geometric sans-serif created for branding purposes and replaced the old Google logo on September 1, 2015.[7] Variations of this typeface family, including Google Sans Text, have been used as the standard user interface typeface on Pixel devices.[8]
