ASUSTeK Computer Inc., commonly known as ASUS, is a Taiwanese multinational technology company established in 1989 and known for motherboards, laptops, monitors, graphics cards and networking equipment.[1] The company’s name comes from the last four letters of Pegasus, the winged horse in Greek mythology that represents the inspiration of art and learning.[2]
Design and History
The ASUS wordmark consists of four lowercase letters in a custom geometric sans-serif typeface. The most distinctive feature is the angular treatment of the “s” characters, which feature sharp diagonal cuts that give the mark a technical, precise appearance. The “a” has a squared-off bowl, while the letterforms share consistent stroke weights and baseline alignment. The compact, horizontal composition reads clearly across product categories from motherboards to laptops.
ASUS introduced a 30th anniversary commemorative logo in 2019, unveiled at Computex Taipei on May 27, 2019.[3] The anniversary mark was designed by the ASUS Design Center and combines the brand’s first letter “A” with an upward-pointing arrow shape.[4] The logo appeared on limited-edition products including the ZenFone 6 Edition 30, ZenBook Edition 30 and PRIME X299 Edition 30 motherboard.[4]
ASUS also maintains sub-brand identities. Republic of Gamers (ROG), established in 2006, initially used a cubic “G” logo before introducing the angular “Fearless Eye” mark, which debuted on the ASUS G1 gaming laptop.[5] In September 2020, ASUS revealed a redesigned TUF Gaming logo, described as projecting “modern simplicity with clean lines and sharp angles,” debuting on TUF Gaming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics cards.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The ASUS name derives from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology, which “represents the inspiration of art and learning.” The company states that ASUS “embodies the strength, creative spirit and purity symbolized by this regal and agile mythical creature.”[2]
The 30th anniversary logo carries documented symbolism. Its arrow-like line contour represents the brand spirit of relentlessly pursuing the extraordinary and moving forward fearlessly over three decades. The bottom of the mark incorporates the Chinese character “人” (person), signifying that people are the foundation and valuable asset of the company, reflecting ASUS’s people-centric design philosophy. When viewed upside down, the logo resembles a heart shape, conveying the company’s continued commitment to creating thoughtful, comprehensive products for consumers.[4]
The ROG Fearless Eye logo was chosen as an angular, hyper-stylized eye to symbolically capture “the sharpness and precision of the ultra-alert eye of a gamer.” The eye itself, beneath the brow, resembles a “G,” an intentional reference to gamers.[5]
Typography and Design
The ASUS wordmark uses a custom typeface designed specifically for the brand. The letterforms feature geometric construction with distinctive angular characteristics, most notably the sharp diagonal cuts through the “s” characters. The consistent stroke weights and baseline alignment create unity despite the unconventional letter construction, allowing the mark to function effectively at various sizes from product badges to building signage.
