EDP Renewables (EDPR) is the renewable energy subsidiary of the Portuguese energy group EDP, operating across wind and solar markets worldwide. The company’s visual identity has followed the parent group’s branding through two significant redesigns, most recently in 2022 when all EDP group companies adopted a unified identity developed by the international design agency Pentagram.
Design and History
In July 2011, EDP Renováveis presented a new brand image to align with its parent company, which had undergone a group-wide rebranding. The new corporate identity was built from four geometric forms: the circumference, the half-circumference, the square and the triangle, which could unfold into seven main symbols. The company stated the design conferred “an idea of innovation” and the ability to evolve over time as the business itself evolves.[1][2]
This 2011 identity was created by the studio of Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister, based in New York.[3] The EDP Renováveis mark abandoned its previous green color in favor of the red used across all EDP group companies.[4] While the concept, color and company name remained consistent with the parent brand, the cluster of circles in the EDP logo was disaggregated for EDP Renováveis to resemble a wind turbine, reflecting the company’s wind energy focus.[5]
In June 2022, EDP and EDP Renewables launched a new identity aligned with their commitment to the energy transition. All companies of the EDP group adopted a unique brand identity, reinforcing their positioning in the energy sector.[6] The identity was developed by a multicultural team from the international design agency Pentagram.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
Pentagram describes the spiral symbol as indicating transformation and growth, making an explicit reference to the renewable energy generation of wind farms and the intricacy of the task ahead to reach EDP’s commitments. The spiral was generated by placing a dot on a circulating surface; triggered by circular movement, the dot naturally draws a line that creates the spiral shape without human interference, representing the connection between everything in nature.[8]
The new logo and graphic identity are inspired by the circularity of nature, the planet, and the various sources of renewable energy: the sun, wind and water turbines.[6] The chosen colors, green, blue and purple, represent the sustainability of nature, clean energy, technology and people, aligned with EDP’s goal of being carbon neutral by the end of the decade.[6][7]
Typography and Design
Pentagram established a common design for all logos within the EDP group, repositioning it as one single brand with a clear purpose, with different descriptors identifying the many parts of the offer. The custom-drawn wordmark in lower case is described as friendly, open and inviting, using each letterform to complement the circularity of the spiral. The supporting type is FT Base, a family of fonts with modernist principles that express humanist values.[8]
