Shazam is a music and audio identification service founded in London in 1999, acquired by Apple in 2018. Its visual identity centers on a blue circular app icon containing a white stylized letter “S,” paired with a lowercase “shazam” wordmark. The current logo system was developed by the Brand Union and unveiled in January 2012.
Design and History
Shazam’s original logo, designed around the company’s 1999 founding, featured a circular emblem with two white curved lines forming the letter “S” on a black background, accompanied by a bold wordmark mixing capitals with lowercase letters.[1] The logo and coloring changed in 2007, shifting toward a light blue palette that remained largely consistent in the years that followed.[2]
By 2011, Shazam had become the most downloaded iOS app of all time, and the company commissioned the Brand Union to develop a new visual identity.[3] The redesign, unveiled in January 2012, introduced a new symbol and refreshed the app icon for the mobile brand.[4] The new mark replaced the earlier emblem with a simple blue circle containing a white stylized “S,” a design that the US trademark registration describes as “the black stylized word ‘shazam’ to the right of a white stylized letter ‘s’ inside a blue circle,” with blue, white, and black claimed as features of the mark.[5]
Following the 2012 redesign, the logo’s color palette was later simplified to a solid bright blue, with all other elements remaining unchanged.[1] After Apple’s acquisition of Shazam, the company registered the Shazam logo and trademark in May 2018.[6]
In November 2025, Apple updated the Shazam iOS app with a refreshed app icon matching Apple’s Liquid Glass theme, making the icon look glossier and more in line with Apple’s updated system apps.[7]
Typography and Design
The Shazam wordmark uses Omnes Bold, a rounded sans-serif typeface, with a distinctive twist: the wordmark mixes capitals with lowercase “a”s brought to the same height.[3] The Brand Union’s redesign also included a typography refresh featuring rounded edges.[4]
