Niantic, the San Francisco-based augmented reality company behind Pokémon GO and Ingress, is identified by an airship logo depicting a sailing ship suspended below a hot air balloon. The mark references the historic Gold Rush-era whaleship Niantic, from which the company takes its name [1].
Design and History
Niantic’s logo, which the company calls its “ARship,” has served as the foundation of its visual identity. The design agency BUCK, which worked on Niantic’s brand identity, described the logo as the starting point for the company’s design system, refining everything down from that symbol to build brand familiarity [2].
In November 2021, Niantic launched its first-ever brand campaign, titled “Meet You Out There,” created with the agency Gravity Road. The campaign introduced “ARship Niantic,” an augmented reality embodiment of the company’s airship logo, revealed through a special app built on Niantic’s Lightship platform [3]. The AR version of the logo, showing the Gold Rush-era whaleship tethered below a hot air balloon, served as a beacon for players in the campaign film [1].
The “ARship Niantic” concept references a 1930s belief that airships would dock at towers, which Niantic suggested is now a reality through AR technology [1]. The ARship was “docked” at the San Francisco Ferry Building and premiered at a special event for Niantic employees [1].
Meaning and Symbolism
BUCK documented the three core elements of the Niantic logo and what each represented for the brand: Ship to Discovery, Balloon to Creativity, and Rings to Energy [2].
Gravity Road cofounder Mark Boyd described the logo as embodying “the spirit of exploration and optimism,” calling it Niantic’s “most distinctive asset” [3]. In an early session with the client, Boyd said the team “drilled in on the logo as the key distinctive asset,” and that “all of those wonderful values of optimism, exploration, magic” were blown up and became the heart of the campaign [4].
The campaign film, directed by Julien and Quentin of Pulse Films and shot in Madrid, revealed the airship logo to the world for the first time, with design work by BUCK and Territory Studio [5].
Typography and Design
BUCK’s work for Niantic included an ident, a unique design system, and custom graphics for the brand film. The agency created and animated character introduction moments and added Niantic markers and directional arrows to break the wall between real life and AR [2]. The design system embraced the idea of inspiring people to explore, bringing spaces to life through game-inspired graphics that look and feel uniquely Niantic [2].
