Polyphony Digital Inc. is a Japanese video game development studio and a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. The company was established on April 2, 1998, when the Gran Turismo development team, originally a group within Sony Interactive Entertainment, was spun off as an independent entity.[1]
Design and History
The current Polyphony Digital logo is a figurative trademark registered to Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. The mark was filed on December 15, 1999, and entered the Australian trade mark register on January 29, 2001.[2] The official image description for the mark identifies its key visual components: chevrons converging to form the letter “P”, vertical stripes forming a rounded-corner rectangle, and an angled pattern.[2]
The company’s official site policy states that the “POLYPHONY DIGITAL” logo used on its website is a registered trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc.[3] The same trademark notice appears in Gran Turismo game credits, where “Polyphony Digital logo” is listed alongside “Gran Turismo” and “GT” as registered trademarks of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc.[4]
Before the company’s formal establishment, the development team operated under the name Polys Entertainment. The earlier Polys Entertainment identity used a “POLY’S” wordmark in a thick multi-colored font with a triangle acting as the apostrophe, as seen on the Japan-only PlayStation game Motor Toon Grand Prix.[5] A second Polys Entertainment logo, used on the Japanese version of Gran Turismo (December 23, 1997), featured an outline of a “p” with an arrow shaped loosely like an “E” inside it, accompanied by the text “SCEI INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT TEAM”.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current logo’s chevron-and-stripe construction forms the letter “P”, an abbreviation of the company name. The logo’s design is described only through its trademark registration, which classifies the visual components as chevrons, vertical stripes, and a rounded-corner rectangle.[2]
Typography and Design
The wordmark portion of the logo uses the company name “POLYPHONY DIGITAL” in a standard wordmark arrangement, as registered in a separate word trademark filed on the same date.[6] The figurative mark combines the “P” chevron symbol with the full wordmark, with the symbol and text registered together as a single figurative trademark.[2]
