PopCap Games is an American video game company founded in 2000 in Seattle by John Vechey, Brian Fiete, and Jason Kapalka, best known for franchises including Bejeweled, Peggle, and Plants vs. Zombies. Electronic Arts acquired the company in July 2011. PopCap operates today as a studio within EA, and its official site is hosted under ea.com. [1]
Design and History
The original PopCap logo was derived from the typeface Delftone Stylus and was designed by one of the company’s founders. In 2007, type designer Mark Simonson was hired to redraw the logo. According to Simonson, the brief was to “clean it up and improve it” while keeping it recognizably similar, because PopCap did not want to stray far from the Delftone-based lettering due to its brand recognition. Simonson noted that “except for the background emblem, practically every detail of the lettering was changed.” [2] [3]
In July 2007, following several acquisitions, the word “Games” was removed from the logo, leaving the “PopCap” wordmark centered. [4] The current corporate logo, used since April 2011, is a horizontal wordmark that abandoned the circular emblem that had accompanied earlier versions. [5]
PopCap’s official style guide, dated March 2012, describes the company’s marks in two categories: “name marks” such as the company and game names, and “design marks” such as the company logo and game logos. The guide specifies the preferred logo lock-up as the PopCap wordmark in horizontal format, with PopCap Red or white as the preferred colors. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The PopCap style guide identifies “PopCap Red” as an official brand color, alongside other specified colors including PopCap Dark Blue. [6] Brand asset databases list the current red as approximately #EF3945. [7]
Beyond the documented color specifications, the company’s official EA profile describes PopCap’s games as “sprinkled with a whirlwind of smile-inducing awesomeness and polished to a shiny sheen,” reflecting the playful, accessible tone the brand conveys. [8]
Typography and Design
The PopCap wordmark’s letterforms trace back to the Delftone Stylus typeface, which served as the basis for the original founder-designed logo. Mark Simonson’s 2007 redraw preserved the overall character of the lettering while reworking the details. Simonson described the goal as making the logo “cleaner and smarter without making it noticeably different to PopCap’s customers.” [3] [2]
