Rockstar Vancouver Inc. was a Canadian video game development studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It operated as part of Rockstar Games from August 2002 until July 2012, when the studio was closed and its staff were offered positions at Rockstar Toronto.[1]
Design and History
Rockstar Vancouver was formed on August 1, 2002, when Take-Two Interactive acquired Barking Dog Studios, Ltd. and renamed it Rockstar Vancouver.[2] The studio’s visual identity followed the established Rockstar Games pattern: each development studio within the Rockstar family used a distinct background color for the shared Rockstar “R” and star mark, allowing each studio to be identified at a glance.
The Rockstar Vancouver logo used a dark green background with black lettering, distinguishing it from other Rockstar studios that used different color schemes such as red for Rockstar Toronto, dark blue for Rockstar North, and purple for Rockstar San Diego.[3] The mark featured the capital letter “R” with a five-pointed star appended to its lower-right end, set on a dark-green square.[4]
Rockstar Vancouver released two titles during its decade under the Rockstar banner: Bully in 2006 and Max Payne 3 in 2012.[5] On July 9, 2012, Rockstar Games announced the studio would close, with its 35 employees offered positions at Rockstar Toronto or other Rockstar studios.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Rockstar Vancouver logo shared the core Rockstar Games identity: a stylized “R” merged with a five-pointed star. The color differentiation among Rockstar studios served a practical identification purpose, with each studio’s logo using a unique background color to distinguish it within the Rockstar Games family.[3] The dark green background of the Vancouver mark was its defining characteristic, setting it apart from the other Rockstar studio logos.
