Sentai Filmworks, now commonly known simply as Sentai, is an American anime licensing and distribution company based in Houston, Texas. Founded in 2008 by John Ledford, formerly of A.D. Vision, the company licenses Japanese animation for home video, theatrical distribution, and streaming through its HIDIVE platform.[1] In January 2022, Sentai’s parent company, Sentai Holdings, was acquired by AMC Networks.[2]
Design and History
The company’s original logo, introduced around 2008, was a typographic wordmark reading “Sentai Filmworks.” A vector version of this mark, sourced from the company’s website, was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2008.[3] The wordmark was rendered in black, a version commonly used on light backgrounds.[4]
In June 2020, the company dropped “Filmworks” from its logo, with the mark simplified to read simply “Sentai.”[5] This change coincided with the company’s broader use of the shorter name across its branding and communications, including its official social media handle.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The company name itself carries documented meaning. According to founder John Ledford, “Sentai” is a multi-layered pun, mostly for the benefit of Japanese audiences. While the word can be translated as “squadron,” “regiment,” or “flotilla,” it essentially means a team or group assembled with specific training and equipment for a specific purpose. Ledford noted that the superhero aspect of the term was a double-play on the company’s mission to help keep the anime industry alive in the U.S.[7]
