Cigna is an American health services company whose visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases since the organization was formed in 1982. The current Cigna Healthcare logo, introduced in 2023, continues a “Tree of Life” motif that has anchored the brand’s identity since 1993.
Design and History
Cigna was formed in 1982 through the merger of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and INA Corporation, with the name combining elements of both predecessors. The company’s first logo was a stark blue-block wordmark featuring the CIGNA name in all capital letters. In 1993, CIGNA Corporation replaced that design with a “Tree of Life” logo, which was adapted from an 18th-century design on a New England quilt. The new identity was created at Landor Associates in San Francisco under the leadership of senior design director Lindon Leader, who led the CIGNA assignment. The 1993 logo featured the tree symbol on a softened teal square above the CIGNA wordmark in a serious, imposing font. [1] [2]
In September 2011, Cigna launched a rebrand as part of a $25 million campaign targeting end-user customers. The company gave up its 18-year-old “Tree of Life” logo for a pictogram where a person standing with arms outstretched doubles as the trunk and branches of a tree. The wordmark changed from all-capital CIGNA to a more casual semi-bold font in sentence case, and the color palette shifted to include blue, green, and yellow tones. The new logo was designed to reflect Cigna’s strategy of “Go Deep, Go Global, Go Individual,” with the roots and leaves of the tree symbolizing products and channels, the horizon line representing access to new markets, and the inclusion of a person signifying a closer relationship with individual customers. [2] [3]
In February 2023, Cigna announced that its health benefits provider business would become Cigna Healthcare, a division of The Cigna Group (formerly Cigna Corporation). The new logo merged the tree emblem with the wordmark, integrating the tree into the letter “i” of “Cigna.” The company stated that the change reflected the evolution of the brand while honoring the “Tree of Life” and its historical significance. The 2023 rebrand was developed in partnership with Siegel+Gale, which helped define the new visual and verbal identities for Cigna Healthcare and the enterprise brand The Cigna Group. [4] [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Cigna’s official announcement of the 2023 logo, the “i” in the new wordmark represents the individual. The leaves that encircle it form a tree, symbolizing health and vitality. The company explained that “Cigna now visually surrounds the individual, demonstrating the support and expertise we provide to those we serve.” [4]
The 2011 logo similarly placed a human figure at the center of the tree design. The Hartford Courant reported that the tree logo resembled a person standing with arms to the sky, with the person also serving as the tree and leaves radiating from the head. It was designed with the intent of showing support for an individual customer’s health and well-being. [6]
Typography and Design
The 2011 Cigna wordmark used a semi-bold sans-serif typeface in sentence case, replacing the all-capital lettering of the previous logo. The 2023 Cigna Healthcare logo introduced a serif-style wordmark in lowercase letters, with the “healthcare” text appearing below in a contrasting sans-serif font. The company stated that the new identity included “new fonts, colors, and a more modern look and feel.” [2] [4]
