DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine and browser company founded in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg. Its visual identity centers on a cartoon duck mascot named Dax, whose friendly appearance has become the brand’s most recognizable element across search results, browser extensions, and product surfaces.
Design and History
DuckDuckGo launched in September 2008 with a simple text-based wordmark and no duck mascot. The duck character joined the brand around 2010, giving the company a more distinctive visual identity. The mascot was redrawn with cleaner lines around 2012, accompanying an interface overhaul as the service gained mainstream attention for its privacy stance.[1]
In 2014, the company shifted its color palette. The red background of the emblem was replaced with an orange tone, and the dark gray and green wordmark colors were replaced with a traditional gray. The emblem’s outline also became thicker and more balanced.[2]
DuckDuckGo refreshed its visual identity again in 2023 with a modernized duck logo and updated typography, reflecting the company’s expansion beyond search into a broader suite of privacy tools including a browser and email protection service.[1] The change was significant enough that Mozilla issued updates in July 2023 to replace DuckDuckGo’s favicon and branding icons across its Firefox products with the latest versions.[3][4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The duck mascot is named Dax, a name DuckDuckGo uses officially across its help pages and communications.[5] The company name itself originates from the children’s game “duck, duck, goose,” which naturally connects to the duck character as the brand’s mascot.[6]
Dax appears in hundreds of Easter egg logo variations that surface when users make certain queries on the search engine. DuckDuckGo’s help pages note there are currently more than 600 versions of these alternative logos featuring the mascot.[5]
DuckDuckGo’s partnership guidelines explicitly prohibit third parties from using Dax in their own integrations, indicating the mascot is treated as a protected brand asset rather than a generic illustration.[7]
Typography and Design
The current DuckDuckGo brand colors, as tracked by brand asset services, center on an orange-red tone (approximately #F05230 or #DD5934) with supporting neutral and accent colors.[8][1] The 2023 refresh moved the identity toward this orange and gray palette, replacing the earlier multicolor cartoon treatment with a cleaner, more confident mark.[1]
DuckDuckGo’s internal development work shows the brand has moved away from third-party typefaces in its product interfaces. A 2023 pull request for the DuckDuckGo iOS app removed all references to Proxima Nova in storyboards and xib files, switching to system fonts for the interface.[9]
