eBay is an online marketplace founded in 1995, originally under the name AuctionWeb. Its visual identity has evolved through two major phases: a 2012 refresh of the multicolor wordmark and a 2024 brand system expansion called eBay Evo. The logo remains a lowercase wordmark in four colors, which eBay describes as its “colorful signature.”[1]
Design and History
eBay’s first logo, used when the company launched as AuctionWeb in 1995, was a monochrome bar with the word “Auction” in black text on a white box and “Web” in white text on a black box.[2] The company changed its name to eBay in September 1997.[2]
In September 2012, eBay introduced its first logo redesign in 17 years.[3] The new wordmark retained the iconic color palette but aligned the letters in a straight line at uniform sizes, replacing the previous arrangement where letters varied in size and height.[4] eBay described the update as “cleaner, more contemporary and consistent,” reflecting the company’s evolution beyond auction-style listings toward fixed-price sales and mobile commerce.[3] The logo was designed by eBay’s in-house team together with design agency Lippincott.[4]
In November 2024, eBay announced eBay Evo, a new brand and design system developed entirely in-house.[5] The logo and its four heritage colors, which have been part of eBay’s brand since 1995, remain central to the identity.[6] eBay’s partner network notes that with the new brand strategy, the logo “expanded beyond the four colors to reflect the diversity of people and products on our platform.”[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
eBay’s official communications describe the logo’s meaning directly. In the 2012 announcement, eBay stated that its “vibrant eBay colors and touching letters represent our connected and diverse eBay community.”[3] The company’s brand playbook similarly states that “the range of color represents the diversity of our community, the range of our products, and the inclusivity of our global platform.”[1]
The four logo colors are red, blue, yellow, and green.[8] eBay’s playbook identifies these as “heritage colors” that “represent our brand’s heritage and form the foundation of our full color palette.”[8] Under the Evo system, this palette was expanded into 17 color families with 8 shades each, totaling 136 colors.[8]
Typography and Design
eBay’s wordmark uses a custom sans-serif typeface called Market Sans. Under the Evo brand system, eBay introduced a customized heavy weight, condensed version of Market Sans for bold headlines.[6] The 2012 redesign aligned the letters in a straight line, removing the varied sizes and heights of the previous wordmark.[4]
