BBC Three is the BBC’s youth-oriented television channel and online brand, aimed at audiences aged 16 to 34. Its visual identity has undergone several significant transformations since the channel launched in 2003, most recently in 2022 when the channel returned to linear broadcasting after six years as a digital-only service.
Design and History
The original BBC Three identity, revealed in October 2002 ahead of the channel’s February 2003 launch, was developed by Matt Penney, a designer at Lambie-Nairn. The logotype was the first element of the brand identity to be revealed publicly.[1]
In January 2016, BBC Three introduced a new logo designed by Red Bee Media. The design replaced the word “three” with a symbol made up of two white bars and an exclamation mark on a pink background.[2] The old logo had been in place for eight years and was failing to work effectively across digital platforms, according to BBC Three’s then-marketing director, who said the new design would work just as well on an app as on a TV screen.[3]
When BBC Three returned as a linear broadcast channel on 1 February 2022, it adopted a new identity developed by in-house team BBC Creative and brand consultancy Superunion.[4] The relaunch included a new set of idents featuring three animated, hand-shaped characters named Captain, Spider and Pointer, interacting against a lime green backdrop.[5] The characters were developed in collaboration with Blinkink director Robert Strange and Ghost VFX studio.[6]
BBC Creative creative director Susan Ayton said the characters were designed to be “as eclectic, funny and entertaining as the channel they represent.” Superunion executive creative director Stuart Radford added that “for a brand like BBC Three, something irreverent and unconventional was required.”[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2016 logo’s two bars and exclamation mark were intended to represent three principles underpinning the brand. According to BBC Three’s head of marketing, the first bar meant “make me think,” the second meant “make me laugh,” and the exclamation mark was designed to refer to “give me a voice.”[7]
For the 2022 relaunch, the three hand characters were given distinct personalities: Captain is the leader, Spider is friendlier, cuter and quicker, and Pointer is more strategic, strong and silent. The colour palette uses a fluorescent green background with the characters rendered in bright pink and purple tones.[8]
Typography and Design
BBC Three’s 2022 identity sits within the broader BBC brand system. In October 2021, the BBC implemented its custom typeface, Reith, across its channel logos as part of a wider brand modernisation led by the BBC’s in-house team and consultancy Wolff Olins.[9] Reith, named after BBC founder John Reith, was first created in 2017 in collaboration with type foundry Dalton Maag, replacing Gill Sans which had been used since 1997.[9]
