Syfy is the American cable television network owned by NBCUniversal that launched in 1992 as the Sci-Fi Channel. The channel’s visual identity has undergone three distinct phases: a Saturn-themed mark used during the Sci-Fi Channel years, a block-letter wordmark introduced with the 2009 name change to Syfy, and a yellow geometric logo created for the network’s 25th anniversary in 2017.
Design and History
The channel launched on September 24, 1992, as the Sci-Fi Channel. Its original logo featured a purple Saturn-like planet graphic paired with the channel name, a look that remained in use through the 1990s and into the early 2000s.[1]
In 2009, NBC Universal announced a network-wide rebranding. The channel would become “Syfy” starting July 7 of that year, a phonetic spelling chosen because the generic term “sci-fi” could not be trademarked. Network president Dave Howe explained: “We’re going to have upwards of 50 Sci Fi Channels in various territories and yet you cannot trademark ‘Sci Fi’ anywhere in the world. We needed a brand name that was own-able, portable and extendable.”[1]
The 2009 rebrand retired the purple Saturn image. In its place, the name “SyFy” appeared in simple block lettering, with the tagline “Imagine Greater” printed underneath.[1][2] The name itself was generated internally at the channel, not by an outside agency. Landor Associates, the branding consultancy credited in press reports, publicly disavowed responsibility, with executive director Ken Runkel stating that “Syfy was a name generated internally and pre-tested at the channel before our involvement.”[3]
In May 2017, ahead of the channel’s 25th anniversary, Syfy announced another full visual identity refresh. The new logo, which introduced a new typeface, was created by the New York and Los Angeles-based agency Loyalkaspar, with 72andSunny providing the strategic framework.[4][5] The updated identity debuted on June 19, 2017, across linear, digital, social and experiential platforms.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said the goal for the 2017 logo was to “have a logo that could feel at home whether it was core space programming, or fantasy and comic books.”[4]
Loyalkaspar’s executive creative director Daniel Dörnemann explained that the agency deliberately avoided leaning into any single genre’s visual language. “SYFY isn’t just about science fiction and space, but includes fantasy, horror and superheroes. All these genres have very different and specific visual languages. So, we needed to create a logo and font that would nod at the genre overall without feeling out of place in any one specifically.”[7]
The 2017 rebrand also marked a deliberate departure from the channel’s previous purple color palette. Dörnemann noted that the brief was explicit: “You shouldn’t hold on to any of the current identity, including the logo and distinct purple colour palette.”[7] The resulting identity uses a yellow wordmark with blocky letter shapes, a stark contrast to the previous curvy version.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2017 identity included a custom type family developed by Loyalkaspar alongside the new logo.[8] The typographic system was designed to be editorial-led, taking inspiration from news outlets like WIRED magazine and The New York Times. Dörnemann explained: “As far as the font goes, we wanted to evoke the quality of a headline font, since a lot of the communication centres around covering events and news.”[7]
The current Syfy logo, as described on the network’s official website, consists of the word “SYFY” in capital letters with a bold, angular and modern typeface, each letter distinctly designed with sharp angles.[9]
