K. Thienemanns is the historical name of the Stuttgart-based children’s and young adult publishing house founded by Karl Ludwig Christian Thienemann on June 1, 1849. The company, which began with books written and illustrated by Thienemann himself, was later renamed Thienemann Verlag and, after a 2014 merger with Esslinger Verlag, operated as Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag GmbH. In 2024, the house adopted the umbrella name Thienemann Verlage for its six imprints, while the legal corporate name remained Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag GmbH.[1][2]

Design and History

The most recent documented visual identity change came in late 2023, when the Stuttgart-based Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag announced it would change its common name to Thienemann Verlage on the occasion of its 175th anniversary in 2024. The change was made visible through a new logo, which already appeared on the spring preview catalogues before taking effect on January 1, 2024.[2][3]

Under the new umbrella brand, the six imprints Thienemann, Esslinger, Planet, Gabriel, Aladin and Loomlight continue to operate. The publisher’s management stated that the anniversary provided an occasion to consolidate all imprints under the short, concise common name Thienemann Verlage.[2]

Earlier in the house’s history, the publisher was known as K. Thienemanns Verlag. After Julius Hoffmann acquired the business in 1862 and relocated it to Stuttgart, it continued under the name K. Thienemanns Verlag (Jul. Hoffmann).[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

No official documentation has been located that describes the symbolic meaning or design intent behind the historical K. Thienemanns logo or the current Thienemann Verlage mark. The publisher’s own history pages focus on the founding and program development rather than on visual identity details.[1]
