Yandex Music is a Russian music streaming service operated by Yandex, offering personalized recommendations, playlists, and podcasts. The service underwent a major visual rebranding in late 2023, replacing its long-standing musical note symbol with a new abstract emblem designed to convey the emotional experience of discovering music.
Design and History
Yandex Music conducted its first rebranding in nine years in December 2023, having last updated its visual identity in 2014. The company stated that the previous visual language “had difficulty keeping up” with the service’s evolution from a simple track catalog into a daily companion and source of musical discoveries. The redesign was driven by the goal of adding more emotion to the brand and positioning Yandex Music as a personal service that reflects each user’s individual world. [1]
The previous logo, which featured a red musical note, was completely abandoned. In its place, the new identity centers on a “bright impulse” or flash, described by the company as symbolizing “the moment of inspiration a user feels from music that has been sensitively selected for them.” [2] The new symbol has been described in press coverage as a star-like shape that dynamically expands into rays when the app launches, with accents on yellow, red, and green colors. [3]
The rebranding was developed by the design team of Yandex’s “Plus FanTech” business unit, working with Russian designer Vadik Marmeladov, the design bureau “Shuka,” and the type foundry Contrast Foundry. [4] According to the design team, Yandex Music became the only streaming service in the world whose logo is not a note, sound wave, or equalizer, marking a deliberate shift from straightforward, functional branding to a more emotional and inspiring identity. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The central graphic element of the new logo, the “bright impulse,” is intended to represent the emotional charge a listener experiences when the service accurately predicts their musical taste. [2] Merdan Agaev, head of the design team at Yandex’s “Plus FanTech” business unit, explained that the brand was built on “the magic of exchanging emotions and energy between artists and listeners.” He described the new logo as an embodiment of this energy, noting that it looks completely different from Yandex’s familiar logos and was designed to be original and memorable. [2]
The flash or burst motif extends beyond the logo itself, integrated into playlist covers, collections, and album artwork. It can appear as a bright gradient graphic, in a single color, or simplified down to a single line. [2]
Typography and Design
As part of the rebranding, the design team developed a custom typeface called Yandex Music Sans, described as a poster-style, high-contrast grotesque that inherits from the Yandex font family. [6] The font was designed to play on the light metaphor of the bright energy impulse, with the company noting that the typography became “contrasting” and that this contrast carries its own metaphor, interacting with the logo and reflecting the play of light and shadow. [2]
Yellow remained the key color in the new visual identity. [2] The design system also employs a principle the team calls “solarity,” where the flash focuses the viewer’s attention on the main element of any layout. [6]
