Rai Südtirol is the German-language radio and television service of Italy’s public broadcaster RAI, produced from its studios in Bolzano for the German-speaking minority of South Tyrol (Südtirol). The service has been broadcasting in German on radio since 1945, with German-language television following in 1966. [1]
Design and History
Rai Südtirol’s visual identity is tied to two distinct rebranding events. On 27 January 2014, the local RAI station in Bolzano changed its name, logo, color scheme and station jingles. The former “Sender Bozen” was renamed Rai Südtirol, with parallel services adopting the names Rai Alto Adige and Rai Ladinia. [2] [3]
The current Rai Südtirol logo, dated 2019 in Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata records, follows the broader RAI corporate rebranding that began in 2016. [4] That initiative, led by Roberto Bagatti, Chief of Brand & Creative at RAI, introduced square-based channel logos across the RAI portfolio. Bagatti has explained that the square form was inspired by Italian design figures Mari, Munari and Vignelli, and their interpretations of minimalism as simplicity, cleanliness and order, combined with modernism as a timeless visual approach. [5] [6]
Bagatti also cited Munari’s discussion of the square’s symbolic meaning, noting that from early human drawings the form evokes the concept of home and country, which RAI considered an apt reference for its visual identity. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The square format used across RAI channels, including Rai Südtirol, was deliberately chosen as part of the 2016 rebranding to create a coherent design across the network portfolio, introduce distinct identities among the channels, and celebrate the history of Italian design. [5] The rebranding aimed to establish a graphic identity capable of expressing RAI’s strength across any platform, from web to television to mobile. [6]
