Rainbow Studios is an American video game developer based in Phoenix, Arizona, best known for offroad racing titles such as Motocross Madness and the MX vs. ATV series. The studio’s official website describes it as an employee-owned independent game developer with a history of critically acclaimed motorsport titles.[1]
Design and History
The studio was founded in 1986 in Phoenix, Arizona, and was acquired by THQ in 2001. In February 2010, THQ renamed the studio THQ Digital Studios Phoenix as part of a corporate reorganization focused on downloadable titles. Following THQ’s bankruptcy, Nordic Games (later THQ Nordic) acquired the studio’s assets and restored the Rainbow Studios name in 2013.[2]
Brand asset tracking service Brandfetch lists Rainbow Studios’ brand colors as red (#FF0000) and white (#FFFFFF), with black also appearing in the palette.[3] The current logo, as documented by the Closing Logo Group wiki, features the word “RAInbOW” in an angular font with a red box to the left containing a stylized letter “R.”[2]
Earlier logo iterations from the 1990s were markedly different. The studio’s first logo, used from 1995 to 1996, showed a CGI space scene with crystal blue rectangles and golden borders featuring a stylized “r” cut into the structure.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The red box and stylized “R” serve as a direct monogram for the studio name, but any deeper intended meaning is not publicly documented.
Typography and Design
The current wordmark uses an angular, custom letterform for “RAInbOW,” with the “R” set apart in a red square. The design is a compact, badge-like lockup suitable for game packaging and credit screens. The specific typeface used has not been publicly identified by the studio.
