Brown University’s athletic teams, the Brown Bears, compete in the Ivy League in Providence, Rhode Island. The university’s official athletic colors are seal brown, cardinal red, and white, as listed on the official athletics website.[1]
Design and History
In June 2022, Brown University Athletics and Recreation unveiled a new logo set and refreshed brand identity.[2] The new primary mark is a stylized “B” in the university’s primary colors of brown and red, which were updated for consistency across academics and athletics.[3] The “B” design honors the letter worn on Brown student-athlete letter sweaters, a tradition dating back to the 1890s.[4]
The secondary mark, named “Indomitable,” pairs the “B” with a standing bear. According to the university’s announcement, the bear design was inspired by statues on campus, including the Indomitable sculpture on Ittleson Quad, Bronze Bruno on College Green, and the bear in Meehan Auditorium. The mark features a fierce, aggressive face and powerful stance intended to inspire competitiveness across all athletic programs.[4]
Prior to the 2022 redesign, Brown’s primary logo from 2018 to 2022 featured an arched “BROWN” wordmark above a brown bear head, with a white outline and red accents on the nose and tongue.[5] Earlier versions of the bear-head mark date to 1997, when the university adopted a logo featuring a bear with arms around a shield, followed by a simplified arched “BROWN” and bear head design in 2009.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The bear mascot has deep roots at Brown. In 1904, alumnus Theodore Green, class of 1887, selected the bear as a symbol for the university, describing the animal as “good natured and clean,” courageous, intelligent, and independent.[7] The first live bear appeared at a Brown-Dartmouth football game in 1905, and live bears served as mascots until the mid-1960s, when the practice was halted amid student protests over animal rights.[7]
The 2022 identity also introduced a custom Brown Bears font, part of a comprehensive and unified visual brand system for the athletics division.[4] The university’s official visual identity policy lists the “Athletics B with Indomitable Bear” among its protected trademarks.[8]
