The Cardiff Devils are a Welsh ice hockey club based in Cardiff, competing in the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League. Founded in 1986 by former professional player John Lawless, the club has played at three home venues since its formation, most recently at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay.[1]
Design and History
In August 2023, the Cardiff Devils launched a complete rebrand ahead of the 2023-24 season, partnering with brand and digital agency Limegreentangerine on the project.[2] The agency described the work as the first major rebrand in 27 years for the club.[3] The club’s official announcement noted that the project began over a year before the launch, with the stated vision of developing a refreshed brand “expressive of our past but equipped to face the future.”[2]
Limegreentangerine’s creative director, Alex Down, described the design process as driven by a clear question: “how can we make this simpler, more impactful but still keep the brand’s soul?”[2] The agency’s case study explains that the new mark is “the old logo, in a new, forward-facing guise,” retaining the pointed chin, snarl, cheekbone, arched eyebrow, and furrowed brow of the previous design, but with added aggression. The old collar was replaced with flames.[3]
The rebrand was unveiled at a special season ticket holder event in early August 2023, where the club revealed its new main logo alongside player announcements.[4] The launch included a new primary logo, a new wordmark, and a tertiary logo, all presented through a dedicated microsite created by Limegreentangerine.[2]
This was not the first time Limegreentangerine had worked on the Devils’ identity. The agency had been a brand and digital partner since 2011, and in 2010 it created a “Devils” wordmark as part of a wider rebranding programme for the club. That wordmark was later featured in the third edition of the “Logo Nest” book series.[5] In an earlier brand refresh, Limegreentangerine overhauled the club’s graphic language, typography, and image treatment while deliberately saving the existing Devils logo from replacement.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2023 identity was designed to balance heritage with modern requirements. Managing Director Todd Kelman stated the club wanted “a logo that was simple, modern and could meet the requirements of the digital world.”[2] Limegreentangerine described the new brand as finding “its strength in its simplicity,” with “fiery resilience with grit balanced out to a distinct silhouette.”[3]
The agency’s case study also notes that the work won a Bronze trophy at the 2023 World Brand Design Society Awards.[3]
