HC ’05 Banská Bystrica is a professional ice hockey club based in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, founded in 2005 after the dissolution of the previous club ŠaHK Iskra Banská Bystrica.[1] The club, nicknamed “Barani” (Rams), competes in the Slovak Tipsport liga and lists its official club colors as white, red, and black.[2]
Design and History
The club’s visual identity centers on a ram, its official mascot, which has been the main feature of the crest since the club’s founding in 2005. The original logo depicted a ram with its head lowered, a pose the club’s management later felt no longer adequately expressed the team’s emotions, characteristics, and philosophy.[3]
In July 2016, after eleven years with the original mark, the club unveiled a redesigned logo at a press conference. The new crest features the ram with a direct, combative gaze, replacing the previous lowered-head posture. Club director Michal Longauer explained that the redesign was driven by the team’s core strengths, namely its fighting spirit and perseverance, which became the foundation for the new logo’s creation.[4] Marketing director Atila Béreš added that the logo was intended to present the strength and fighting quality that characterized the team’s recent style of play.[5]
Alongside the primary ram crest, the 2016 update introduced a series of supporting logos featuring a stylized crown of the free royal city, a fragment of the municipal flag, and the city’s name, emphasizing the club’s connection to Banská Bystrica.[3]
In June 2026, the club announced it would return to its traditional name, HC ’05 Banská Bystrica, after two seasons under a sponsor-based name. The announcement confirmed that the traditional club logo, familiar to fans from the club’s successful years, would also return alongside the name.[6] Later that year, when TAM Autohof became the club’s title partner for the 2026/2027 season, the club stated that the logo would remain unchanged, with only the team’s media name changing to HC ’05 TAM Banská Bystrica.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The ram serves as the club’s mascot and the central figure of its crest. The 2016 redesign shifted the ram’s depiction from a lowered head to a direct, forward-facing gaze, a change the club explicitly tied to its values of fighting spirit and perseverance. Club representatives stated that the previous logo no longer sufficiently expressed the emotions, characteristics, and philosophy of the club, and that the new ram was “full of strength and fighting spirit,” better corresponding to the team’s style of play.[3]
The supporting logos introduced in 2016 incorporate civic symbols, including a stylized crown of the free royal city and a fragment of the municipal flag, which the club said were meant to emphasize its belonging to Banská Bystrica.[3]
