FK Palanga was a professional football club based in Palanga, Lithuania, that competed in the A Lyga, the top division of Lithuanian football, during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.[1] The club was re-established in 2010, though football traditions in the seaside city date back decades earlier.[2]
Design and History
FK Palanga underwent a significant rebranding in early 2018 to celebrate the club’s promotion to the A Lyga. The club introduced a new logo and adopted new colors of blue and white.[1] The redesign was announced in January 2018, following the club’s victory in the LFF I Lyga championship in 2017, which earned them a place in the top division.[2]
The new logo prominently features the year “1957,” marking the founding of the first football club in Palanga.[1] The club sought the help of Lithuanian football historian Gediminas Kalinauskas to research the true roots of football in the city, which led to the discovery that the first club, Palangos “Nemunas,” was established in 1957.[2] The club’s manager V. Butkus noted that the desire to explore history was prompted by the creation of the new logo.[3]
FK Palanga was dissolved in 2020.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The inclusion of “1957” in the logo was a deliberate tribute to the city’s football heritage. The club expressed respect for the Palanga football history and the teams that, since 1957, had participated in various Lithuanian championships and defended the city’s honor.[2] The rebranding to blue and white accompanied this new identity as the club prepared for its debut in the A Lyga.[1]
